Today
Randy Sparks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine

A million tomorrows shall all pass away
Ere I forget all the joy that is mine today

I'll be a dandy and I'll be a rover
You'll know who I am by the song that I sing
I'll feast at your table, I'll sleep in your clover

Who cares what the morrow shall bring?

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine

I can't be contented with yesterday's glory
I can't live on promises winter to spring (winter to spring)

Today is my moment and now is my story

I'll laugh and I'll cry and I'll sing

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine

A million tomorrows shall all pass away
Ere I forget all the joy that is mine today

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Randy Sparks's song Today convey the message of living in the present moment and cherishing what we have today, instead of worrying about tomorrow. The song is divided into two parts, the first describing the beauty of the present moment and the second emphasizing the importance of living for today, rather than past or future moments. The opening line "Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine" creates a vivid image of a fleeting moment, perfectly encapsulating the theme of transience throughout the song. The line "A million tomorrows shall all pass away" highlights the inevitability of change and encourages us to enjoy and appreciate what we have while we still have it.

The second part of the song focuses on the importance of living in the present moment. The lines "I can't be contented with yesterday's glory, I can't live on promises winter to spring" remind the listener that dwelling on past achievements or focusing on future hope can cause us to miss out on the wealth of experiences that are around us in the present moment. The line "Today is my moment and now is my story" encapsulates the message of the song, encouraging us to live fully in the present and create our own unique stories.

Overall, the song Today encourages us to appreciate what we have, make the most of the present moment and create our own stories that we can look back on with joy.

When I was in a junior high, I went to listen to The New Christy Minstrels Live in Tokyo. this is the only song that I can sing all in English even now at the age of 65.
It is a beautiful song indeed!

貴方と同じ年代です。この曲に出会ってから45年になりますが未だに飽きません。
歌詞はちょっとHですし、「今日が良ければ」的な刹那な曲ですが大好きな曲です。

May God continue to bless you and the remaining Minstrels
, with good health, a bounty of happiness and the unlimited gratitude from those of us who lived and loved your music in the 1960’s…

I thought that it was Randy who recorded the original version in 1964…sadly I am told that only 3 of the original 10 are still alive with us…they have given us a beautiful legacy…💝
