Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, come back, baby
Oh, mama please dont go, yeah
'Cause the way I love you
Child you'll never know.

Oh, come back baby, yeah yeah
Let's talk it over one more time
Oh, now, now.

Well, I admit, baby
That I was wrong
Don't you know, baby
Child you been gone too long.

Oh, come back baby, yeah, yeah
Let's talk it over one more time
Oh, now, now.

Say If I could holler
Like a mountain jack
Yeah, yeah, oh, people
I'd call my baby back.

Oh, come back baby, Woo yeah
Let's talk it over one more time
Oh, now, now.

Now one of these days, baby
And It won't be long, yeah
you gonna look for me child you know
And Ill be gone.

So come back baby, yeah, yeah

Let's talk it over one more time
Oh, now, now...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Charles's song "Come Back" express a plea for a previous lover to return. The first line, "Oh, come back, baby, oh mama please don't go," sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is desperate for the other person not to leave because of the intense love he feels for them. The repetition of "come back baby" throughout the song emphasizes this longing and desire for reconciliation. The lyrics also speak to regret, admitting fault and apologizing for being wrong.

The line "If I could holler like a mountain jack, yeah yeah, oh people I'd call my baby back" demonstrates the desperation of wanting to call the person back, but the singer doesn't have the power to do so. The final verse conveys a sense of inevitability, with the singer stating "one of these days, baby, and it won't be long, you're gonna look for me child and I'll be gone." This suggests that the singer is ready to move on if the other person does not return soon.

Overall, the lyrics of "Come Back" convey a sense of deep emotional longing and heartbreak, as well as a sense of repentance and desire for reconciliation.

I am white. I am British and I am 66 years old.  I am reading stuff in these comments which I find embarrassing in the extreme.

Ray was the greatest musician of the 20th C and possibly of all time.  I really don't care who 'covered' his songs and who thinks he was bettered by inferior musicians. He wasn't. I was priveleged to see him live in the UK in 1963 and 1996.

Tell me one other musician who could absolutely dominate blues, soul, gospel, R&B, jazz, country etc., in the way he did.

There is no one else.

his voice is beautiful

Invisible Sun

This song is 12 years ahead of its time. Like James Brown singlehandedly invented funk with Cold Sweat then this song singlehandedly invented the genre of soul, which would dominate the late sixties to the early eighties.
