Don't Set Me Free
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't set me free
And leave me all alone
Don't make me be
Just a rolling stone
Lock me up and throw the key away
Make me a prisoner night and day
And whatever you do to me
Don't set me free

Don't set me free
On my knees I pray
Have mercy on me
Don't send me away
Like a train jumpin off a track
Without ya baby, I'd blow my stack
And whatever you do to me
Don't set me free

Like a stamp on a letter, if you let me stick with you
I could love you better, than anyone else can do

So don't set me free
Though I've done you wrong
Baby can't you see
Without you I can't get along
Keep me in a state of agony
Make me miserable as can be
And whatever you do to me
Don't set me free

Like a stamp on a letter, if you let me stick with you
I could love you better, than anyone else can do

So don't set me free
Though I've done you wrong
Baby can't you see
Without you I can't get along
Keep me in a state of agony
Make me miserable as can be
And whatever you do to me
Don't set me free
No, no, no, don't set me free
I'm saying no, no don't set me free
Baby, no, no, don't set me free

Overall Meaning

In Ray Charles's song Don't Set Me Free, he is expressing his fear of being deserted and abandoned by his lover. He begs her not to leave him and to imprison him instead, to make him miserable and keep him in a state of agony. Ray Charles professes his love and devotion to his lover, admitting that he has done wrong, but he cannot bear the thought of losing her. He believes he can love her better than anyone else and will do whatever it takes to keep her in his life.

One interpretation of the lyrics is that Ray Charles's fear of abandonment stems from his blindness, which could make him feel vulnerable and isolated. But the lyrics could also be a metaphor for the insecurities that many people feel when they are deeply in love. The imagery of being imprisoned or locked up can be interpreted as the fear of losing control, the fear of being vulnerable, or the fear of losing the one thing that brings us happiness.
