I Didn't Know What Time It Was
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I was young...
Yesterday, perhaps...
Danced with Jim and Paul
And kissed some other chaps.

Once I was young,
But never was naive.
I thought I had a trick or two
Up my imaginary sleeve.

And now I know I was naive.
I didn't know what time it was
Then I met you.
Oh, what a lovely time it was,

How sublime it was too!
I didn't know what time it was
You hold my hand.
Warm like the month of May it was,

And I'll say it was grand.
Grand to be alive, to be young,
To be mad, to be yours alone!
Grand tosee your face, feel your touch,

Hear your voice say I'm all your own.
I didn't know what time it was
Live was no prize.
I wanted love and here it was

Shining out of your eyes.
I'm wise,
And I know what time it is now.
Once I was old --

Twenty years or so --
Rather well preserved:
The wrinkles did't show.
Once I was old,

But not too old for fun.
I used to hunt for little girls
Up my immaginary gun.
But now I ain for only one!

I didn't know what time it was
Then I met you.
Oh, what a lovely time it was,
How sublime it was too!

I didn't know what time it was
You hold my hand.
Warm like the month of May it was,
And I'll say it was grand.

Grand to be alive, to be young,
To be mad, to be yours alone!
Grand tosee your face, feel your touch,
Hear your voice say I'm all your own.

I didn't know what time it was
Live was no prize.
I whanted love and here it was
Shining out of your eyes.

I'm wise,
And I know what time it is now.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ray Charles's song "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" describe the singer's journey from youth to maturity and how meeting a special someone changed his perspective on life. The first verse talks about the singer's youthful carelessness when it came to romance. He danced with many people and kissed multiple people, leading him to believe that he was experienced in love. However, he soon realized that he was naive and had a lot to learn about love.

The second verse talks about how the singer's meeting with his special someone changed his life for the better. Up until meeting this person, he believed that life had no prize and that love was just a fleeting emotion. But after meeting this person, the singer's perspective changed, and he realized that love wasn't just a feeling but a real experience.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "I didn't know what time it was" to emphasize how the singer was initially unaware of what love truly was before meeting his special someone. The last verse talks about how the singer is now wise and knows what time it is, meaning that he now understands what love truly is.

I'm not a strong Ray Charles fan, but I love his rendition of this song. I heard it one morning on the SiriusXM Frank Sinatra station and am happy that I can listen to it at will on this website. Many thanks to whoever posted this.

Thank you so much for uploading  this song. There are so many wonderful renditions of this classic song, but Ray's version is my absolute favorite! It's hard to find this also and I had given up until I saw it here. Thanks again!!!!!!

jim partridge

greatest singer of all time tied with Ella followed by Frank and Tony. Ray and Ella could sing anything including Rock. Frank and Tony were supreme but within a narrower area of music

Wow...
Early Brother Ray, combining Charles Brown and Nat Cole, and on one of my favorite Rodgers & Hart tunes.
(Listen to him contribute to the invention of "soul" in the fade-out:  Another Piece of the Puzzle.)

@morderic The live version of this song from that year or the year before is floating around here and is amazing, with a show stopping rendition of Am I Blue following after. Seek it out.
