Leave My Woman Alone
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
Say, you better leave my woman alone

Well, I know you are a playboy
And you've got women all over town
But listen buddy if you ever sweet-talk my little girl
I'm gonna lay your body down

If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
You know you don't want, oh yeah (get in trouble)
If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
(Say it) Oh, you better leave my woman alone

Well I know you got your money
And you've got a new fifty-six too
But if I ever see my little girl in your new car
I'm gonna do some work on you.

If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
You know you don't want, oh yeah (get in trouble)
If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
(Say it) Oh, you better leave my woman alone

Well I don't believe in trouble
So I don't want to start a fight
So if you'll take heed and stay away from my little girl
Then everything will be alright

If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
You know you don't want, oh yeah (get in trouble)
If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
(Say it) Oh, you better leave my woman alone

My woman alone
My (woman alone)
You better leave (woman alone)
Better leave (woman alone)
My woman alone (woman alone)
I said (woman alone)
I said (woman alone)
I said (woman alone)
You better leave (woman alone)
You better leave (woman alone)
You better leave (woman alone)
My (woman alone)
-I- (woman alone)
-I- (woman alone)]
My woman (woman alone)
My woman alone (woman alone)
Oh, now (woman alone)
Oh, oo (woman alone)
Oh yeah (woman alone)
Oh yeah (woman alone)
You better leave (woman alone)
My woman alone (woman alone)

If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
If you don't want, you don't have to (get in trouble)
If you don't want, you don't have to [get in trouble]
(Say it) Yeah, you better leave my woman alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Charles's song Leave My Woman Alone are about a man threatening anyone who crosses the line with his lover. He warns the playboy to stay away from his little girl or else he will take revenge. The lyrics convey a sense of anger and determination, as the singer makes it clear that he won't tolerate anyone who tries to sweet-talk or harm his significant other. He asserts that he doesn't want to start a fight but would not hesitate to take action if necessary. Ultimately, the message of the song is that if someone respects other people's relationships, they don't have to get in trouble.

The song is a statement against infidelity and disrespect in romantic relationships. The playboy represents a character who is willing to hurt someone else's feelings for their own pleasure, and the singer speaks out against this behavior. On another level, the song can be seen as a metaphor for protecting what you love and not allowing anyone to take it away from you. Charles's voice and rhythm convey the intensity of the lyrics, making the song a powerful statement against disrespect and impropriety.

My guitar instructor in college played with Ray Charles. He once told me about a time where he had forgotten his pass and security at a venue didn’t believe he was Ray’s guitarist. At the same time he was arguing with security, Ray was being walked past them. So my teacher says “Ask Ray, he’ll tell you who I am” Without thinking, the security guard asks Ray: “have you seen this guy before?” Without missing a beat, Ray says “I haven’t seen that man a day in my life....yeah that’s my guitar player, let him in.” 😂
