Ring Of Fire
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is a burning' thing
And it makes a fire ring
Bound by love's desire
I fell into the ring of fire

I fell into your burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

(Girl, you know)
Taste of love is sweet
When two hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Ooh, but the fire went wild

I fell into your burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into your burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

Love is a burning' thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into the ring of fire

I fell into your burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into your burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

And it burns, burns, burns

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ray Charles's song "Ring of Fire" describe a passionate and intense love affair. The singer compares love to a burning thing, and falling into a fiery ring of love. The imagery of fire and flames suggest that the singer is engulfed in the intensity of the relationship, and that it's impossible to escape the power of their love. They describe the taste of love as sweet, but also reveal that the fire that started out gentle and innocent escalated quickly and became wild and all-consuming. The repetition of the phrase "and it burns, burns, burns" underscores the intensity of this love and the power of the ring of fire.

Interestingly, while many people might assume that "Ring of Fire" was written by Ray Charles, it was actually written by June Cash and her husband Merle Kilgore in 1963. Although recorded by several artists, including Johnny Cash, it was Ray Charles's rendition that became a hit in 1963 and reached No. 96 on the US pop chart.

I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan...but this version hits more of the emotions of the lyrics in the song. when he slows it down and sings his style of the "burn burn burns your ring of fire" it hits me hard and even get me misty eyed with how meaningful its being sung. Ray Charles really took this song to a more meaningful place for me.

Spot On! I agree the song is definitely on another level. I am knowing his fellow musicians said he was “Genius”. I have no problem with that. I like Classical Country but I think I am liking Ray’s Blues/ Jazz genre also. Those “covers” he did, were amazing! He knocked those songs out of the park. Hearing these I miss him but I am grateful that I can enjoy his music along with Johnny Cash; Ernest Tubbs, Red Foley, Hank Williams , etc.
