Sail Away
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lock the door, sun's a fallin'.
Poke the fire, don't let the cold in.
Gonna try to sail away from the rest of my life.

Found a boat to make the break in.
Filled with hope 'bout the step I'm takin'.
Gonna try to sail away from the rest of my life.
Spent a long time list'ning to the captain of the sea,
Shoutin' orders to his crew; no one hears but me.

Cast away, tide's a runnin'

Hoist the sail, strong wind's comin'.
Gonna try to sail away from the rest of my life.

Spent a long time list'ning to the captain of the sea,
Shoutin' orders to his crew; no one hears but me.

Lock the door, sun's a fallin'.
Poke the fire, don't let the cold in.

Gonna try to sail away from the rest of my life.
Gonna try to sail away from the rest of my life.

Written by Randy Newman, by the way. And Ray Charles was Randy Newman's greatest inspiration, by his own admittance.

That slow down in the chorus is one of the coolest choices in any arrangement. How can you groove at such a slow tempo? It's just so nasty in the best way.

@grxengine

It's in the style of what they call an "old 100" hymn. They sing those in old timey Baptist churches and I agree. It's was a brilliant choice.

@@grxengine thanks so much for the information! I love a lot of gospel inspired music but I don’t know very much about the tradition itself. That’s a fun thing to learn! Any tunes in particular in that style that you recommend?
