You'll Never Know
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you walk through a storm
Keep your chin up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams
Be tossed and blown
Walk on
Walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams
Be tossed and blown
Walk on
Walk on
With hope in your heart

And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ray Charles's song You'll Never Walk Alone convey a message of hope and perseverance in the face of difficult times. The imagery of walking through a storm, with wind and rain whipping around, represents the challenges that life can present. However, the lyrics urge the listener to keep their chin up high and not be afraid of the dark. The promise of a golden sky and the sweet silver song of a lark after the storm represents the idea that, in the end, there is always good that will come out of adversity.

The repeated phrase, "walk on," emphasizes the need to keep moving forward, even when it feels difficult or hopeless. The lyrics acknowledge that dreams may be tossed and blown, but despite this, it is important to maintain hope in one's heart. The idea that "you'll never walk alone" reinforces the importance of community and support during difficult times.

Overall, this song serves as a powerful reminder to stay strong in the face of adversity and to lean on the people around us for support.

You give your hand to me
And then you say "Hello"
And I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
But you don't know me, no
No, you don't know the one
Who dreams of you each night
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
To you I'm just a friend
That's all I've ever been
No, you don't know me
I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you, yeah
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
A chance that you might love me too
You give your hand to me
And then you say "Goodbye"
And I watched you walk away
Beside the lucky guy
I know you'll never know
The one who loved you so
No, you don't know me
But I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
I'm afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
A chance that you might love me too
You give your hand to me
And then you say "Goodbye"
And I watched you walk away
Beside the lucky guy
Oh, you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so
No, you don't know me
I say you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so
No, you don't know me
No, you don't know me

During my career as a drummer, I played this tune with Ray many times. Thanks for the memories.

Wow I’m so jealous we don’t have artists even close to this that we other drummers could aspire to play for these days

This so makes me think of my Dad who died just short of the millennium. I'm crying even as I text. I miss my Dad, and I'm 72 years old. It never goes away, especially when listening to music like this.

@belsaye47

I'm 78 and still miss my dad

@mikeguerrero72

I know what you mean Liz. I'm 70 years old and I lost my Mom this last March 27. It hasn't been very long so that's why it still hurts a lot. I try to look at it like at least I had my Mom for 70 years. I suppose it's never easy huh?

I too am 72, albeit a year after your comment. Both of my parents passed in 2016. I heart has been limping along ever since, i get it.

@@stuartweissman7306 Limping along. Excellent description of my feelings today. It's tougher some days than others.
