Starting off as a singing waiter in 1916 in Chicago, he made his way to New York where he started his first band, The Black and White Melody Boys, playing mostly Dixieland jazz. They recorded tracks on various labels from 1920 to 1923. Miller augmented his band, the style changed to contemporary jazz and by 1924, Miller and his group were recording.
The band’s recording career spanned the years 1924-1925 and featured such musicians as Miller on drums, Frank Trumbauer on sax, Miff Mole on trombone and pianist Rube Bloom.
The group’s choice cuts can be found on the release Ray Miller and his Brunswick Orchestra 1924-1929 on Timeless Records.

(Buzz around, buzz around
Keep a-buzzin' 'round)
Bring home all the honey, love, to me
(Little bee, little bee, little bee)
Let me spend the happy hours
Roving with you 'mongst the flow'rs
And when we get where no one else can see
Be my little baby bumble bee
(Buzz around, buzz around
Keep a-buzzin' 'round)
We'll be just has happy as can be
(You and me, you and me, you and me)
Honey, keep a-buzzin', please
I've got a dozen cousin bees
But I want you to be my baby bumble bee
Be my little baby bumble bee
Bring home all the honey, love, to me
Let me spend the happy hours
Roving with you 'mongst the flow'rs
And when we get where no one else can see
(Cuddle up, cuddle up, cuddle up)
Be my little baby bumble bee
(Buzz around, buzz around
Keep a-buzzin' 'round)
We'll be just has happy as can be
(You and me, you and me, you and me)
Honey, keep a-buzzin', please
I've got a dozen cousin bees
But I want you to be my baby bumble bee
Buzz-buzz
The lyrics of Ray Miller And His Orchestra's song Be My Baby express the singer's plea to their loved one to try to understand and empathize with their emotional state. The singer asks their partner to imagine being in their shoes and feeling the same longing and yearning for the relationship that they once had. The lines "Put yourself in my place, baby / And try to understand the way I feel / Imagine the tables turned / And how I've yearned to have you back in my arms" capture the singer's desire for their partner to see things from their perspective and appreciate just how much they miss them.
The second verse continues along the same theme, with the singer asking their partner to remember that this is their first serious relationship and that they don't want to let it go. The lines "Two people with the same sweet memories shouldn't let love go by / So put yourself in my place, baby / Then you'll know how much I really care" emphasize their belief that they have something special between them that they shouldn't give up on easily. Overall, the lyrics of Be My Baby depict a heartbroken and vulnerable individual begging their loved one to reconsider their split and give their love another chance.
