Razorlight is a four-piece consisting of Borrell (vocals & guitar), Björn Ågren (guitar), Carl Dalemo (bass) and Andy Burrows (drums)
Their debut album, Up All Night, was released on June 28, 2004, reaching number 3 in the UK album charts on 4 July. The critical reception was generally good, receiving good reviews from NME, Q magazine and Billboard, although they were also accused of lack of imagination and unoriginality for allegedly borrowing ideas from other influential bands, notably The Strokes. They appear to polarize opinion. NME wrote that the album: "bristles with passion, energy and, most importantly, amazing songs", while they were described elsewhere as "nearly everything wrong with rock and roll today". Their fans, though, embrace the music for its simple melodies and multi-layered, easy-going compositions.
Frontman Johnny Borrell caused some controversy and surprise when he likened himself to musical legend Bob Dylan, quipping "If Dylan's making the chips then I'm drinking the champagne". This led to suggestions of self-promotion. This statement was taken out of context however as Borrell was comparing his and Dylan's first albums, not their overall career. The band became very popular on the London music scene when they arrived earlier in the year. Large demand caused the band to play extra shows, including a 7,000+ capacity gig at Alexandra Palace. The album was heavily marketed in the UK.
You And The Rest

And you'll do it at any cost
And you say that you believe in life
Any love you've never lost
Everything keeps changing on me
I can't tell you how I feel
People shift and re-arrange on me
And it has been shown
You can get broken bones
And it has been proved
There's so much to lose
When we try to live as one
We try to live as one
You ask me where I'd be
And to you I just can't lie
There were only ever two women here
You and the rest have passed me by
And yes, I'm thinking of you
Can't switch you off at any cost
While I figure out these rules of love
And pretend I've never lost
But I lost from the start
I was kicked back hard
Intake and back draft blew
Then the flames consumed
Well, we try and live as one
We try and live as one
I'm not making plans for tomorrow
I'm just figuring it out
You can beg it, steal or borrow
Or count me out
See the moment disappearing
And the joke is getting thin
I see my enemy appearing
And I'm him
We try to live as one
We try to live as one
Can we try to live as one?
Oh, we try to live as one
When you get back, when you get back, ohh
When you get back, when you get back, ohh
When you get back, when you get back, ohh
When you get back, when you get back, ohh
The lyrics to "You And The Rest" by Razorlight seem to explore the complexities and challenges of love and relationships. The first verse seems to be a conversation between two people, one expressing their devotion to the other and their belief in love while the other struggles with trusting what is real in a world where everything keeps changing and people keep shifting and re-arranging. The chorus emphasizes the risks and vulnerabilities of trying to live as one, with the lines "you can get broken bones" and "there's so much to lose" indicating the potential for pain and loss.
The second verse introduces the idea of lost love, with the singer admitting that there were only ever two women in his life and that the other options had passed him by. He continues to struggle with the rules of love and the feeling of having lost from the start. The bridge of the song suggests a sense of hopelessness and despair, with the repetition of "we try to live as one" sounding more like a resignation than a declaration of intent. The repeated refrain of "when you get back" at the end of the song adds to this sense of longing and lost hope.
Overall, the lyrics seem to convey a mixed message about the possibility and costs of love. While one person expresses their belief in love and devotion, the other struggles with trust and the fear of loss. The chorus emphasizes the risks and potential for pain, while the bridge suggests a sense of hopelessness and despair. The repeated refrain of "when you get back" seems to indicate a longing for something that may never be realized.
