Casualties
Red Delicious Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're the casualties, no-one tells you about us
You'll hear stories
But you have to live to believe
We're the bodies piled up by the roadside
You'll smell us burning
It'll give you bad dreams
Don't run away'we're a cautionary tale
Walk softly and take heed
Don't offer us your sympathy
You don't know what we need

We're the lost and the forsaken
Screaming just to hear a voice
A sound to fill the empty spaces
A hand to hold and still the shaking

We are the spineless, the skinless and the broken
You'll be a crutch, 'cause we can't stand on our own
You'll gather round us
To comfort and heal us
But the nature of our pain will remain unknown
Don't come to me for happiness
I'm an open pit, and you will just fall in
Don't ask me what my problem is
I wouldn't know where to begin

We're the lost and the forsaken
Screaming just to hear a voice
A sound to fill the empty spaces
A hand to hold and still the shaking

We're the wasted and the weary
Giving up and falling down
We're the needy, sick for your love
A hand to hold and still the shaking
Let it go and lay it down
A drug to take to stop the aching

I get so tired of holding up
I get so cold that I am chilled to the bone
I cry so hard it knocks me down
I just don't want to be alone

We're the lost and the forsaken
Screaming just to hear a voice
A sound to fill the empty spaces
A hand to hold and still the shaking

Don't offer sympathy
'Cause you don't know what I need
I'm so tired of holding up that I'm giving up and falling down
I don't want to be alone
And it chills me to the bone
So don't ask me what's wrong
It's been going on so long I don't know
I'm wasted and I'm cold
And I need a hand to hold
And the nature of my pain remains unknown even to me
I'm screaming for the sound

To feel like someone's 'round
Let it go and lay it down and fill the empty space with love

Overall Meaning

In "Casualties", Red Delicious explores the experience of being marginalized, forgotten, and traumatized. The lyrics describe a group of people who are often neglected and misunderstood, people who are struggling to cope with their pain and who long for connection and compassion. They are the "casualties" - the ones who suffer and die, unnoticed and unappreciated. The song suggests that their stories are important and worth telling, and that we need to listen to them in order to fully appreciate the depth of their struggles.

The repeated chorus, "We're the lost and the forsaken, screaming just to hear a voice...", emphasizes the isolation and desolation that the "casualties" feel. They are desperate for someone to hear them, to acknowledge them, to offer them comfort and support. The lyrics are filled with raw emotion - pain, anger, frustration, and despair. The metaphorical language - "bodies piled up by the roadside", "spineless, skinless, and broken", "an open pit" - highlights the physical and emotional scars that these people carry.

The final lines of the song, "Let it go and lay it down and fill the empty space with love", offer a glimmer of hope. Although the pain remains unknown and overwhelming, there is a sense that healing can begin when we let go of our burdens and open ourselves up to love and connection. The song encourages us to be aware of the "casualties" in our midst, to listen to their stories, and to offer them the love and compassion they so desperately need.

I just don't understand why these guys didn't make it real big. I've been a fan ever since the mp3.com days.

Ursula

Should have made it big! Can't believe I found them here. Cool song!

I first caught this band when they covered a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers song for a contest. I seem to recall they were 1st (or at least near the top), but that is a very long time ago now. I'm disappointed that I can't find anything about this band. Where/if the vocalist ended up anywhere else... I bought their MP3.com album when it came out.

Can someone please upload the acoustic version of this song. I've long since lost it from hard drive to hard drive and it's haunting how beautiful the acoustic version is. I'm another listener from MP3.com who is trying to gather the songs from then that were amazing.

I don't even know if these ki d of shops still exist - but back in the mid-90's used CD shops were very popular.
There was a really big one in Boston - near Harvard Square. I went there often to trade or buy older CDs.

If something like that still exists in your area - try looking there. Yard, estate, and moving sales are also good places to look for older stuff, too.
