Daddy's Girl
Red Sovine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I recall the night, That you came into this world.
I couldn't believe the doctor,
When he said "It's a little girl".
Well I said " Now doc, You must be wrong.
You see I want a boy"
Then he laid you in my arms,
And my heart sang with joy.
[Chorus]
Daddys girl, Daddy's girl.
I'm the center, of Daddy's world.
I know I'm Daddy's number one,
For he loves me like I was his son.
Daddy's girl.

I recall the day, I took you to a baseball game.
You brought along your baby doll,
And half its baby things.
We sat there a playing house,
While the Dodgers played the Braves
And everyone in the bleachers, looked at us as if to say.

[Chorus]

I recall the day, I took you on a fishing trip.
You said "Daddy, won't that hook, hurt the fishes lip?"
And you said "If they don't get air,
Those things in the can will die"
So we turned the worms all loose.
And chased some butterflies.

[Chorus]

I recall the day, That your young man come to call.
Seems like only yesterday,
When you swam and played football.
But I know the time has come,
That I must set you free.
But no matter where you are,
You know what you are to me!

Daddy's girl, Daddy's girl.
I'm the center, of Daddys world.
I know I'm Daddy's number one,
For he loves me like I was his son.
Daddy's girl.

Daddy's girl, Daddy's girl.
I'm the center

Overall Meaning

Red Sovine's song "Daddy's Girl" is a touching tribute from a father to his daughter. The song reminisces about the various memories they share together, from the day she was born to the day she brings home her boyfriend. The father initially expresses disappointment at the news of having a girl but quickly forgets it once he holds her in his arms, his heart filled with joy. Sovine highlights his special relationship with his daughter by repeatedly referring to her as "Daddy's Girl," emphasizing that she holds a special place in his world.

The chorus of the song serves as a culmination of the father's love for his daughter, where he affirms that he is the center of Daddy's world and his daughter is his number one. He loves her just as much as he would have loved a son, which further emphasizes the bond they share. Over time, as his daughter grows up, his role shifts from a protector to a guide, and he must now let her go and set her free while reminding her that she will always be Daddy's Girl.

My daughter, Janine, absolutely loved this song...we used to sing it on road trips...
Sadly she passed away suddenly, at the age of 39.
That happened a little over two years ago.
This is the the first time I've listened to it since then.
RIP Sweety... you are forever, Daddy's Girl.

Only the truth! Always and forever,! Are we clear!

My daddy passed away March 20,1986. I was 15. I myself was and still am a daddy's girl. I had an unbreakable bond with him. Daddy bragged about me all the time. I went with him everywhere he went. I miss him so much. He was so nice and friendly. He never met a stranger. He made new friends everywhere he went. He worked so hard all his life. He was such a good man. I miss him terribly. My life hasn't been the same without him. My mom is deceased, too. All I have now is my sisters and brothers. But, I carry daddy in my heart and in my thoughts. Rip, daddy. Love you and miss you

this is a real goal for me. I'm a single dad and my daughter is 3. I hope she grows up to feel the same way about me. I was asked once what do i think success is. For me it's not about money, power, property or status, it's all about the legacy i leave behind for my little girl. If she grows up and can honestly say the things, you say about your daddy then I will consider my life to have been very successful. I have to be better than the daddy I never had for her.

@RyleKittenhouse

My father was my favorite person in the world. I'd follow him around like a dog while he would do wood work or car repairs. I remeber he would swing me around playing this. Thank you for raising a self sufficient young girl.

This is mine and my dads song. We almost lost him last year in 2023. My husband and I stopped at the cottage place we rent from and Sunday in the country played this song and I cried. He is 88 and still going but he has a little bit of health issue going on and I will miss him when he goes but for now I spend as much time with him that I can. I love him very much and not only is he my dad but he is my best friend.

@chozolady

regardless of how much we argue, dad. i will always love you. regardless of religion and politics, i will always love you. we don’t have the best relationship since i became a woman. i’ll always be daddy’s girl.

@michaelmcnew

Make sure you build a better relationship it's really important

@dawnwebster5592

My dad played this during my wedding. He walked down the aisle during rehearsal holding a pistol. LORD i miss that man every second of every day. I am truly a daddys girl.
