Both Sides Now
Reeves Dianne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds go in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down
And still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds
At all

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show you leave
Them laughing when you go

And if you care don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take
And still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love
At all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you right aloud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose
And still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds,
I really don't know love,

I really don't know life,
At all

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Reeves Dianne's song "Both Sides Now" vividly describes the singer's youthful imagination that saw bows and flows of angel hair, ice cream castles in the air, and feather canyons everywhere in the clouds. This outlook made the clouds a thing of magic and wonder. But as she grew older, the clouds no longer held any such enchantment; they only blocked the sun and rained and snowed on everyone. The singer reflects on how many opportunities have been hindered because of the obstruction made by clouds in her way.

The song continues to describe other things that the singer has looked at from both sides now. For instance, the singer describes love from both the sides of give and take, but eventually concludes that it is love's illusions she recalls and not true love. Lastly, she elaborates on how she has looked at life from win and lose sides, from tears and fears to dreams and schemes, how old friends shake their heads and say she has changed, and how something's lost, but something's gained in living every day.
