Friendly Fire
Reigning Days Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is all you ever asked for,
Heaven on the avenue?
Your name is on the pavement
But everybody walks on by
You do yourself a favour
But no one stops to ask you why,

Come down and lock me up in a pretty row of silver screens,
And pull me underneath the circus freaks and beauty queens

You put your faith in the pretty liar
You take a walk in the friendly fire with me

You dance around your bunker
Living in your Sunday best
You jumped the ship that sunk ya
But you forgot to wear a vest
You're floating in the courtyard
With promise of a wedding dress
You're jumping off the platform,
The tracks will only leave regrets

Come down and lock me up in a pretty row of silver screens,
And pull me underneath the circus freaks and beauty queens

You put your faith in the pretty liar
You take a walk in the friendly fire with me

You put your faith in the pretty liar
You take a walk in the friendly fire with me

You put your faith in the pretty liar
You take a walk in the friendly fire with me

Overall Meaning

Friendly Fire by Reigning Days addresses the theme of betrayal and how people trust the wrong people, ultimately getting hurt. The song talks about someone who has been let down by the people they trusted, and ironically put their faith in someone untrustworthy as well. The lyrics portray the singer's plea to come down and experience the consequences of their actions. They talk about how people turn a blind eye to their suffering, and how they are left alone even when they do things right. The singer seems to be sarcastic when addressing the "pretty row of silver screens" and "circus freaks and beauty queens," signifying the fake people they have come to associate with.

The metaphorical imagery of the silver screens and the circus freaks signifies the illusionary world that many people live in. The singer feels like they have been pulled under the fake facade of good and kind people who have let them down. The line "you take a walk in the friendly fire with me" is a reference to how people blindly trust even when they know they could get hurt. The lyrics try to tell the person who has been hurt that they are not alone and that others feel the same hurt of betrayal.
