You Oughta Know
Reinhart Haley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want you to know, that I'm happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both

An older version of me
Is she perverted like me
Would she go down with you to the theater
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

'Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, till you died
But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you're with her?

'Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, till you died
But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

'Cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me
And I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it well can you feel it

And, I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

That I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

Overall Meaning

“You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette (which was later covered by Reinhart Haley) is a song about the frustration and anger that comes with being left by someone you love. The opening lines set the tone that the singer is trying to move on from the breakup and wishes the best for her ex-partner and the person they’re now with, but also acknowledges the pain that it brings up. She wonders if the new woman her ex is with possesses the same qualities as her and if he does the same things with her as he did with the singer, like going down to the theater. She then touches on the fact that the love they shared wasn't enough and questions if the new woman knows about the promises he once made to the singer.

The song then hits its climax when the singer confronts her ex, reminding him of the “mess” he left behind when he broke up with her. She calls him “Mr. Duplicity”, questioning if he had truly moved on or if he thinks about her when he’s with someone else. The song ends with the singer emphasizing that she won’t be fading away and that she will make sure he knows the impact he had on her life.

Overall, the song is a relatable and cathartic expression of the pain and frustration that comes with a messy breakup. The singer’s voice conveys the raw emotion of the lyrics, leaving a lasting impression on the listener.

I do like her version of this Alanis Morissette tune , but I do like her voice and the song !

@Shmiguelly

I don't know why but when they made the studio versions they seemed to take away all the rasp from Haley's voice. I didn't understand it.

@emmanuel7042

It probably hurts her voice, singing like that damages the voice

The Charismatic Voice has done some very informative YouTube Reactions to several Haley songs with PMJ. She is a trained opera singer, and she discusses briefly the potential damaging effects of using thon rasping growl. However, her conclusion is that Haley performs it in such a way that it will have minimal effect on her voice. She states that there have been a number of interesting studies on that very issue, and she has little concern about Haley's way of doing it..

Что бы она ни пела, мне нравится все......
