Her first album Ishqa Ishqa came in 2004 with Gulzar as lyricist and husband Vishal Bhardwaj as composer. She is the recipient of 58th National Film Awards for the Best Female Playback singer for the film Ishqiya in 2011.
She is reportedly working on a new album on traditional sufi poetry.

The lyrics to Rekha Bhardwaj's song Badi Dheere Jali talk about a slow burning ache in the eyes that becomes foggy and misty, and seems to never disappear. The imagery in the song is of a shore that has been slowly eroded away by the waves, becoming hollow and empty. It is said that the reason why the eyes burn so bright and slow is because they are ablaze with dreams and desires that are never fulfilled.
The song goes on to express how, while lying in bed at night, the singer has lit a fire of her own dreams and desires, and burned her eyes with tears. She remembers how her mother used to sing lullabies to her when she was young, but now the pain keeps her awake at night. Despite the tears and the pain, the fire in her eyes never fades.
