Now that you mention it, planets in the Goldilocks zones of Red Dwarf stars are always tidally locked, so therefore the same can be applied to Krypton as well

That's what I waa thinking. They had a Golden age where they traveled to space in the past, meaning they had more than enough capability and knowledge to do so, even better than their predecessors. If the council was so deadset on mining the core, they should restart their colony program and take whatever valuable resources to the new worlds. But they should have done this BEFORE they started mining anything, and they should have been more properly educated on the risks, which seems to be what Jor-El was trying to do. They truly did damn their planet to destruction for material gain. What they hell were they even going to do with this core matter, if it wasn't for the advancement of colonies?

Maybe for confiniecy? Because there's little to none know about planet orbiting the red giant let alone how it atmosphere works. Assuming there is one out there, it's still depend on what type of atmosphere it were, what color it'll scatter and what color is emitting from the sun itself. Like I said it's little to none we know about it although it's surely will different than ours and what the movies shown to us.
