The Chair
Resurrection Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Paralysing facts, countless diseases,
Semi-mobile, semi-useless subhuman,
So many startled eyes say it: "Only an occasional ray of light...but feel free to subtract any ray of hope."

Disabled, confined, labelled and shelved,
Minus limbs, minus movement, minus worth,
"So sorry," they say, but they forget me,
Once a year they buy themselves that right.

We won't understanding, not pity,
We need love, not occasional headlines,
We've been used, abused, and aborted for years,
And I've learned not to expect respect for my tears.

Regular check-ups, needles and charts,
The nodding of heads and the shedding of hearts,
My legs are defenceless, this chair is my cell,
My food is my medicine, reality hell.

Disabled, confined, labelled and shelved,
"So sorry," they say, but they forget me,
Once a year they buy themselves that right.

We won't understanding, not pity,
We need love, not occasional headlines,
We've been used, abused, and aborted for years,
And I've learned not to expect respect for my tears.

Sometimes I feel so removed,
Lost in a maze of self-pity and dreams,
No one regards me, I just don't belong,
They don't know how to act around me,
Sometimes I feel so removed,
Lost in a maze of self-pity and dreams,
No one regards me, I just don't belong,
They don't know how to act around me.

Until you came to me, Lord, I had so little to live for,
'Til you came to me, Lord, I had nowhere to turn,
Jesus, you alone have helped me to grow beyond my circumstance and despair,
My suffering can't compare to what you took willingly,
Sacrifice nowhere near what you gave on that tree,
I can see though I'm blind,
Loving one at a time, there is so much that I can do.

Giving love and following you,
Giving love and following you,

I'm so glad you care,
Let my love flow free on this chair.

Overall Meaning

In "The Chair" by Resurrection Band, the singer speaks from the perspective of someone who is both physically and socially confined due to a disability. The song expresses the frustration and sorrow felt by those who are often forgotten and dismissed by society. The lyrics highlight the fact that people who are differently abled are not looking for pity, but rather understanding and love.

The first verse describes the challenges faced by those who are semi-mobile, semi-useless subhumans with countless diseases. Despite occasional rays of hope, the singer does not believe that things will get better. The second verse describes the experience of being labeled, shelved, and forgotten. The singer notes that while people may express sympathy for them once a year, they quickly forget about them. The final verse speaks of the hope that faith in God brings, and how it has given the singer a reason to live and a sense of purpose, despite their physical limitations.

Overall, "The Chair" is a powerful representation of the experiences of people who are overlooked and undervalued by society. It highlights the need for empathy, love, and respect for those who are differently abled, and the importance of faith in finding hope and purpose in difficult circumstances.

"This" is what Rez-Band was truly all about... They challenged the "Christian-Music-Norm" of the time and ministered to those of us who needed something "Real" and "Authentic" that we could not find within the "Bubble-Gum" of Christian "Pop". While church elders across the country threatened to take Kaiser and Band beyond the city walls and stone them we drenched ourselves in the raw emotion and sanctified lyrical content of this band. I will never forget driving home from work as a young man of 19 years of age, a heart breaking by the Spirits in-dwelling and the vehicle for softening my heart was Rez-Band.... I am an "old" man of 54 now who has the privilege of caring for and rearing my youngest son, disabled and in a wheel chair for life. Praise God for men of vision who follow their heart and God's leading. God's word has not returned void in this music and message!

Disabled confined, labeled and shelved

That was my experience to a degree. I was a young man, believer, churchgoer and all. I became obsessed with this band. I saw them live in 1982 on the DMZ tour. I'm revisiting them now after 30 years. Still, I'm blown away by the guitars, bass, vocals, lyrics. Hard rock, blues, and metal really soothe my soul. I could not care less if they are Christians or not. They recorded some great albums. Great musicians. Awesome.

Rez Band definitely exposed the Cookie Cutter Christians!!

This is holy and righteous. It doesn't even matter if you are a believer or not, anyone can tell that.

Amen, I could not agree more with your assessment...I too was powerfully moved and greatly encouraged by this band of 'Real' Christians...living out the word of God..in action...as they worshiped in spirit and truth, and ministered the gospel of Jesus every time I heard or saw them...boldly and in love. May the Lord bless you brother as you love on your family, and those around you...Grace and Peace..

I loved this when I was in my early teens, had all their stuff on vinyl. Now 25+ years later, I gotta say this really rocks.
