Slave
Reyne James Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's a heart all alone
And the door is always open
Go away from your window
Pull the shades way down low
And in a whisper, words are spoken
Higher and higher
You've got to fly
You've got to care
When the feeling's gone
And you can't go on, slave
When things ain't right
You wanna stay all night, slave
Looking for someone
Who will always be strong
And who will not let you hide
You need your defender
For right or for wrong
You know the path is deep and wide
Higher and higher
Taking you there
You've got to fly
You've got to care
When the feeling's gone
And you can't go on, slave
When things ain't right
You wanna stay all night, slave
When the feelings gone
And you can't go on, slave
When things ain't right
Don't give up the fight, slave
The lyrics of the song "Slave" by Reyne James talk about finding strength and support in difficult times. The first verse speaks of a valley with a light, a heart that is alone, and an open door. The next few lines suggest retreating from the world and keeping to oneself, seeking solace in whispered words. The chorus emphasizes the need for someone strong and supportive, urging the listener to fly and care. When things get tough, the lyrics suggest not giving up, but rather digging in and fighting.
The second verse talks about the importance of having a defender who will not let you hide, and challenges the idea that the path in life is easy. The final lines of the chorus repeat the idea of not giving up and fighting through whatever challenges come your way.
Overall, the lyrics of "Slave" encourage the listener to seek out support and not give up in the face of adversity. The song acknowledges that life can be tough, but suggests that there is always hope and that there are people who will be there to help you through the difficult times.

Thanks so much for the upload.
You just don't hear James or Aussie Crawl on the radio except for the once in a blue moon Hucci Facucci Mama or Reckless ( excuse my spelling - no speaka Italia as Ted Bullpit would say..)
James and Aussie Crawl are icons and legends of Australian music so it is shame.
Perhaps they need a mini series like they did with Inxs to boost their popularity..
Personally, it wouldn't sit well with me as Inxs were all about the limelight whereas Aussie were no doubt trying to make a buck but they weren't so glam about it all.Β
I am happy hearing them once in a blue moon and jumping on Youtube every now and then, It just makes me appreciate it how special they are. I wish I could locate my old James Reyne cassette tape...
It is a bit selfish as in this scenario James and the boys get little royalties.
I have heard that if restaurants or shopping centres play an artists song the artist gets a little compensation.

I'm 46 and produce Drum and Bass music, and this is one of my favourite songs of all time. James Reyne is a masterful songwriter and has been a major influence on my music.
Both his solo music and Australian Crawl have some of the greatest hooks ever devised.

Great insight. I think a lot of people struggled to comprehend his diction but his lyrics really are poignant and capture the times perfectly. I love, love, love this song β€

Australia has produced way more than its fair share of great world class bands & musicians - a good few of which are criminally underrated on a global scale.
@TheWarbut13
Australian legend. My 3.5yr old daughter listens to his music with me . She likes most of his songs . When we play random songs, she knows exactly which are james singing .
