While still in high school, he recorded his first solo effort, Mythologies, released on the Carpe Diem label, and produced by future 97 Murry Hammond. Miller and Hammond then formed the group Sleepy Heroes, a power-pop trio that released one CD - Under A Radio Sun - and promptly disbanded.
In the early 1990s, Miller started performing country songs acoustically with Hammond with the moniker Ranchero Brothers - a duo that performs occasionally to this day.
Miller's second solo album The Instigator was released in 2002. In 2006, he released The Believer. Recently he released the self-titled Rhett Miller in 2009.

Bonfire
Rhett Miller Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Underneath the north star and the sycamores
Tell me that you love me
I'll tell you what I will do forevermore
Close your eyes and see
What this could mean to you and me
Everything is going to change
Tell me all your big dreams
Tell me bout the kind of world you wanna build
Living up to you is an enormous thing to do
Everything is going to change
Isn't it strange, isn't it strange
How everything will change
The night is young
The sky is deep
For all we know the whole worlds asleep
We've got to let them go
The fire is hot, but your hand is cold,
Lets fall in love before we get old
Watch the fire glow
Watch the fire grow
Everything is going to change
Everything is going to change
Isn't it strange, isn't strange
How everything will change
In the song "Bonfire", Rhett Miller describes a romantic moment shared between two people as they sit together by a bonfire, surrounded by nature. The singer invites their companion to join them underneath the north star and sycamore trees, and expresses their love for one another. The lyrics suggest that in this moment, the singer envisions a future with the person they're with and encourages them to share their dreams and desires for the world they want to build together. The line "Living up to you is an enormous thing to do" expresses the magnitude of the commitment and responsibility they undertake, but they are willing to embrace it regardless. As they sit together watching the fire grow, the singer observes that everything is going to change, both in their personal lives and in the world at large, and wonders at the strange and unpredictable nature of change.
The imagery of the bonfire and nature is used to convey a sense of intimacy and closeness, but also one of transience and impermanence. The singer invites their companion to embrace the fleeting moment and enjoy their time together, knowing that nothing lasts forever. The chorus repeats the phrase "everything is going to change" several times, almost as a mantra, reinforcing the idea that the only constant in life is change itself. The song appears to be a celebration of the present moment and a recognition that life is unpredictable and ever-changing, but that we can find comfort and joy in the connections we make with others.
