Dequantes Lamar first considered a career in professional baseball, but in 2008, the Atlanta native issued the single "Stay Down" featuring the Stack Money Boyz. Things came to a halt when he landed in jail for a year on burglary charges, but upon his release in 2011, Quan began to make up for lost time. Hooking up with the Atlanta crew Loyalty Ova Royalties and becoming quick friends with member CEO Teezy came next, but Teezy's untimely death later in the year put a stop to Quan's planned mixtape debut. He would re-emerge a year later on the Think It's a Game label and release the mixtapes I Go in on Every Song plus Still Goin In. The year 2013 began with a tour opening for Trinidad James, along with a guest appearance on Gucci Mane's Trap House 3 album. In the summer, Quan issued the infectious club track "Type of Way," which cracked the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also became a member of Rich Gang, and co-headlined the 2014 mixtape Tha Tour, Part 1 with Birdman and Young Thug. The tape received widespread acclaim, and the non-album single "Lifestyle" reached number 16 on the Hot 100. Quan released the track "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)" in 2015, and it became his biggest solo hit, reaching number 26.
Rich Homie Quan continued releasing mixtapes, and in 2016 he landed a record deal with Motown. March 2017 saw the release of the single "Replay," which appeared on the Back to the Basics mixtape. Led by the singles "Change" and "34," his debut album, Rich as in Spirit, arrived in March 2018, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard 200. He then put out the EP The Gif, and Coma followed in 2019. Quan resumed releasing solo material in 2021, with the singles "Daily Bread" and "To Be Worried." His EP Family & Mula appeared in 2022. ~ David Jeffries & Paul Simpson, Rovi
Back Against the Wall
Rich Homie Quan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I want them hunnas i want that lettuce
Blue new money, shoutout to the teller
Shoutout to the OG, shoutout to the letters
Shoutout to the quiet nigga
Shoutout to the reverend
Shoutout to the 2 3 5, that's a 7
Shoutout to the Lord I ain't
I ain't fucking with no niggas
Until I get rich
Whole lotta money over here wanna count it
Whole lotta drugs I got them over the counter
Diamonds looking like water out the fountain
Louis V pyjamas for when a nigga lounging
Coming direct nigga ain't no way around it
Diamonds so wet I'm damn near drowning
Don't want shit to do with my ex
I don't care nun bout her
And I swear to God can't turn my
Blunt down this shit getting louder
Took off with all of my
Relationships I got out of
When you get money seem like you
Gain a whole load of power
Ran my check up now these niggas sour
With my back against the wall
Who am I to call?
A lawyer said a couple racks will get him out
He don't care to charge it
He'll be home today
I pray my lawyer beat my case
(I'm on my knees praying)
I pray my lawyer beat my case
(I pray my lawyer beat my case)
There's no light hitting my face
(Fuck the judge and the DA)
I pray my lawyer beat my case
My lawyer beat my case
I pray my lawyer beat my case
In the first part of the lyrics, Rich Homie Quan expresses his desire for wealth and success by referencing money, "Fetty" (likely referring to rapper Fetty Wap), and "hunnas" (hundreds). He shouts out to the bank teller for helping with his financial transactions and acknowledges the influence of older, wiser individuals (the OG) and the significance of written communication (the letters). He also gives respect to those who may not seek attention but still make an impact, such as the quiet individual and the reverend. The numbers 2, 3, 5 totaling 7 may hold personal or symbolic importance to the artist. He affirms his loyalty to God over temptation and negativity, emphasizing a focus on success and financial gain. The repeated phrase "Shoutout to" serves as a way to express gratitude and recognition for various entities and influences in his life.
Continuing on, Rich Homie Quan describes his lifestyle of abundance, boasting about his wealth and drug use. He describes his diamonds as glistening like water from a fountain and his luxury attire, such as Louis Vuitton pajamas, indicating his comfort and extravagance. He confidently asserts his directness in his approach to life and mentions his flashy jewelry, suggesting an opulent and lavish lifestyle. The mention of his ex-girlfriend shows a dismissive attitude, indicating that he has moved on and is focused on his own success and enjoyment. The lyrics convey a sense of confidence and satisfaction in his current status, with a clear focus on material wealth and independence.
The chorus of the song reflects a more vulnerable and anxious tone as Rich Homie Quan discusses a legal predicament where he feels cornered and desperate. With his back against the wall, he questions who he can turn to for help, potentially alluding to a lack of support or options in a difficult situation. He references a lawyer who suggests a payment could secure his freedom, demonstrating his reliance on external assistance to navigate his legal troubles. Despite a sense of resignation and frustration towards the justice system ("Fuck the judge and the DA"), he holds onto hope and faith that his lawyer will successfully handle his case, emphasizing the weight and uncertainty of his legal predicament. The use of repetition in the chorus highlights his anxiety and reliance on his legal representation for a favorable outcome, underlining the high stakes and emotional intensity of his legal troubles.
In the final part of the lyrics, Rich Homie Quan continues to express his desperation and dependence on his lawyer to secure his freedom. He repeats the plea for his lawyer to beat his case, emphasizing the urgency and importance he places on this legal matter. The repeated mention of praying on his knees underscores the depth of his concern and his need for divine intervention to overcome his legal challenges. The darkness symbolized by the absence of light hitting his face suggests a sense of entrapment and isolation, emphasizing the seriousness of his legal predicament. Despite his frustration and anger towards the legal system, he maintains his hope and determination for a positive outcome, clinging to the belief that his lawyer's skills will ultimately lead to his exoneration. The lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability, fear, and urgency in the face of legal trouble, revealing a more introspective and emotional aspect of Rich Homie Quan's life and struggles.
