Richard Burton and Julie Andrews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky as lucky can be
Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you
Or blow me a kiss
And that's lucky too

Now as the ladder of life as been strung
You may think a sweep's on the bottommost rung
Though I spends me time in the ashes and smoke
In this 'ole wide world there's no 'appier bloke

Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky as lucky can be
Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you

Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky as lucky can be
Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you

I choose me bristles with pride
Yes, I do
A broom for the shaft and a brush for the flume

Up where the smoke is all billered and curled
'Tween pavement and stars is the chimney sweep world
When the's 'ardly no day
Nor 'ardly no night
There's things 'alf in shadow
And 'alf way in light
On the roof tops of London
Cool, what a sight

Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-ee
When you're with a sweep, you're in glad company

No where is there are more 'appier crew

Than them wot sings, chim chim cher-ee, chim cher-oo

Chim chiminey, chim chim
Cher-ee chim cher-oo

Overall Meaning

The song "Chim Chim Che-ree" from the 1964 musical film "Mary Poppins" is a delightful ode to chimney sweeps who are often regarded as the lowliest of the working class. The first verse speaks of the lucky fortunes of a chimney sweep, emphasizing their positive outlook and happiness despite the hazardous and dirty nature of their job. The lyrics "Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you" illustrate the idea that the sweep's positive energy is contagious, and to shake hands or blow a kiss with a sweep would bring good luck.

The second verse reflects the social hierarchy where the sweep's job is considered to be at the bottom rung, but the sweep himself is content and happy with his job despite the social stigma attached to it. The lyrics "I spends me time in ashes and smoke, in this 'ole wide world there's no 'appier bloke" show that the sweep is not bothered about his place in society and takes pride in his work. The final verse paints a picture of the chimney sweep's world at the top of London's rooftops, where they are in their element amidst the billowing smoke and where day and night merge into obscurity. The song culminates in the joyful chorus, "Chim chim cher-ee, chim cher-oo," as the chimney sweeps sing and dance with gladness.

This was the performance that brought Julie Andrews to the attention of Walt Disney.  When Walt was told about it by his writers, he went to see the play and the rest was history.  Mary Poppins.

ProudMetFan

So wish I could find a copy of the televised version of the play with Andrews and Burton I saw as a child in the seventies. It's what made me fall in love with musicals. sigh.

epaddon

There is unfortunately no full televised version with them. This Sullivan show and a 1962 special "The Broadway Of Lerner and Loewe" is all they ever did in terms of performing costumed excerpts from the show.

Happy 50th anniversary to an immortal musical.
