Guitar Heroes
Richard Thompson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't go out with my friends on a Saturday night
My guitar's like a woman and you know I've got to treat her right
I've got to practice all night and day
I've got to play the way my heroes play
I've got to learn how the do it the Django way

O my teacher says they're going to kick me out of school
'Cause I'm nothing but a bebop, twang-headed rock and roll fool
If I don't do my homework I've got to go
But they can't teach me what I've got to know
How do I make my guitar sound like Les Paul?

I'll do the washing up later, let me practice if I choose
But how does Chuck Berry make it bounce right out of the grooves?

My girlfriend says she's going to dump me any day soon
If I don't stop strumming my guitar and get out of my room
If I don't get a life she's going to look elsewhere
She says, there's some normal boys out there
I said, I'll catch you up when I've cracked this James Burton tune

My Mum and Dad say they're going to put me out in the street
I'm excommunicated till I get a job and get on my feet
They say I'm not making a contribution
But I'm still searching for a musical solution
I've got to know how the Shadows get that beat

Well I played and I played till my fingers bled
I shut out all the voices but the voice in my head
Now I stand on stage and I do my stuff
And maybe it's good, but it's never good enough
To tell you the truth, I always hid it
I still don't know how my heroes did it

I still don't know how my heroes did it
Guitar Heroes

Overall Meaning

Richard Thompson's song "Guitar Heroes" is a humorous take on the struggles and dedication of a guitar player aspiring to emulate his idols. The first verse begins with the singer acknowledging the sacrifices he must make to achieve his goal of mastering his craft. He compares his guitar to a woman, affirming the time and energy he must dedicate to practice. This verse also includes a reference to the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, foreshadowing the singer's desire to emulate several other guitar legends throughout the song.

The second verse centers on the singer's academic struggles, as his "bebop, twang-headed rock and roll fool" identity conflicts with his school's expectations. Despite his teacher's warnings about being kicked out, the singer values his own ambitions and questions if traditional schooling could ever teach him the secrets his heroes knew. He muses over guitar innovator Les Paul's sound and seeks to understand how he can replicate it.

The final verse alludes to the singer's social life, with his girlfriend threatening to leave him for a "normal boy" without a guitar obsession, and his parents threatening to kick him out unless he gets a job. Despite their warnings, the singer explains that he simply cannot give up the quest to achieve his idols' greatness. He concludes in the chorus with an admittance of his insecurity and 'impostor syndrome' - still not understanding how his heroes were able to do what they did.

Overall, Richard Thompson's "Guitar Heroes" offers a humorous portrayal of the passion and dedication required to master an instrument, as well as referencing several famous guitarists and their sounds.

Showing off a bit, isn't he? ☺

(Not that he isn't entitled...)

WB

i mean i guess he could be... although at the end he does admit that he still doesn't know how his heroes did it even after his lifetime of practice and dedication to studying the greats.

Bouwe Bear

I've seen him casually do a great Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Chile in an interview. He obviously could have made a verse about Jimi but it would have been too long. So IMO he's holding back, not showing off :)

Karen Stinnett

It’s the content, if his heroes showed off in this song he has to as well.
