I Want Candy
Rick Derringer & Ted Nugent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to tell you
My head is filled with things to say
When you're here
All those words they seem to slip away

When I get near you
The games begin to drag me down
It's all right
I'll make you maybe next time around

But if I seem to act unkind
It's only me, it's not my mind
That is confusing things

I want to tell you
I feel hung up and I don't know why
I don't mind
I could wait forever, I've got time

Sometimes I wish I knew you well
Then I could speak my mind and tell you
Maybe you'd understand

I want to tell you
I feel hung up and I don't know why
I don't mind
I could wait forever, I've got time

I've got time
I've got time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rick Derringer and Ted Nugent's song I Want Candy are about a person who is struggling to express their feelings when they are around someone they have feelings for. The first verse talks about how their head is filled with things to say, but when this person is around, they can't seem to find the right words. The second verse talks about how the person feels hung up and doesn't know why, and wishes they could speak their mind and be understood.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "I've got time," which may signify the person's hope that they will eventually be able to express their feelings and have them reciprocated. The line "But if I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind" suggests that the person may be struggling with their own insecurities and anxieties, which prevent them from being their true self.

Overall, the song conveys a sense of vulnerability and longing, as the person struggles with their emotions and hopes that someday they will be able to express their feelings to the person they desire.

I remember this the day it came out, I was there. One of the best songs out that year as I recall. The 70s was the decade of some of the best rock music ever made.
