Opening
Rick Wakeman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at the person looking at you
Saving a life-line looking at you
Fairly long journey, safely arrived
Maybe you'll get there looking alive

To visit a plane, exploring in time
To capture a view
To weaken the strong, to strengthen the weak
To colour a view

To visit a plane, exploring in time
To capture a view
To weaken the strong, to strengthen the weak
To colour a view

Taking a chance on the opening line
Losing the impact, everyday time
Saving the friendship, holding a view
Out of perspective, never adieu

Lost in a vacuum, floating around
Puzzled by nature, blinded by sound
Hoping for movement, deafened by sight

Power and glory, power and glory
Power and glory, weakened by night

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rick Wakeman's "The Opening Line" are all about exploring and taking chances in life. The opening lines of the song focus on the idea of looking at someone who is looking at you. This could be interpreted in a few ways, but it seems to suggest that we should take notice of those who are paying attention to us, and perhaps even rely on them for support and guidance.

The next two lines speak of a journey, one that has been safely arrived at. This could be seen as a metaphor for life - we all have to take a journey to get where we are, and it's important that we arrive safely. The next lines speak of visiting a plane, exploring in time, and capturing a view. Again, this could be taken as a metaphor for life - we need to explore and take chances in order to experience and learn new things.

The chorus of the song speaks of taking a chance on the opening line, and losing the impact of everyday time. This could suggest that when we take chances and explore, we risk losing our sense of time and urgency. But, it's also important to save our friendships and hold onto our views as we go through life. The last lines of the song speak of being lost and puzzled, hoping for movement but feeling deafened by sight. It's clear that life can be confusing and overwhelming at times, but we have to keep moving forward and striving for power and glory.

The best show I have ever seen in person was their performance in Rio de Janeiro in 1975 on the tour "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". Greetings from Brazil.

That is indeed a lovely box. After you take all that stuff out of it, my cat would agree too!

Rick Wakeman, your music is always in my heart and you will forever be my favourite keyboard player. Back in the days I loved Journey to centre and the King Arthur album. And also all the other album you recorded. I newly have been looking for Liztomania, because I owned it on cassete in those old days. Seeems to be difficult to find on CD. Maybe I buy the box, even I already have the most of it. Love from Stein Sæther in Norway to you Rick.

I was lucky to be at The Royal Festival Hall on that wonderful evening and similarly at The Crystal Palace Bowl. One of my favourite Rick gigs was at Cromer Pier with the waves lashing in the background. Magic indeed.

Wasn't Criminal Record 1977 Prog? That was my favorite album. So many great memories of listening to that one! I wore out two vinyls of that one and the 8-track! I've now moved on to the CD. Judas Iscariot is on my Top Ten list of all-time favorite pieces from any performer.

I agree but. it appears to be just that time period 74-77 when everything he did was with big tours and lots of grandeur. Criminal record was my fave too but, it was more laid back and after he rejoined Yes and prog itself had seen its heyday.

Looks like a beautiful box set but unfortunately it’s too expensive for me at the moment now I am a pensioner. Would be nice to be able to buy it in parts so your fans of 50 years could get one and not just for the wealthy.
I saw you at Rotherham’s classic rock society opening concert, must have been 30 odd years ago. It was a sellout but I went down as I only lived across the road just for a glimpse of my hero and was stood at the open fire door when you walked up to say you were about to start and come in. I explained I didn’t have a ticket but you said come in you are my guest and sat me at the front. Thank you for a wonderful night Rick I will never forget your kindness.
