Roundabout
Rick Wakeman & Jon Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be the round about
The words will make you out 'n' out
You change the day your way
Call it morning driving through the sound and
In and out the valley

The music dance and sing
They make the children really ring
I spend the day your way
Call it morning driving through the sound and
In and out the valley

[Chorus]

In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see you
Ten true summers we'll be there and laughing too
Twenty four before my love you'll see
I'll be there with you

I will remember you
Your silhouette will charge the view
Of distance atmosphere
Call it morning driving through the sound and
Even in the valley

[Chorus]

Along the drifting cloud the eagle searching
Down on the land
Catching the swirling wind the sailor sees
The rim of the land
The eagle's dancing wings create as weather
Spins out of hand

Go closer hold the land feel partly no more
Than grains of sand
We stand to lose all time a thousand answers
By in our hand
Nex to your deeper fears we stand
Surrounded by a million years
I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out
I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out

[Chorus]

I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out
I spend the day your way
Call it morning driving through the sound and
In and out the valley

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Roundabout" by Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson portray a journey through nature, both physical and emotional. The opening lines introduce the singer as a "roundabout," suggesting a cyclical journey, while the words they use will clearly express their meaning. The line "you change the day your way" suggests a sense of control and agency in how we navigate our lives. The imagery of "driving through the sound" and "in and out the valley" suggests a beautiful, ever-changing landscape.

The second verse emphasizes the power of music to excite and move people, especially children. The singer spends the day "your way," suggesting an openness and adaptability to new experiences. The chorus introduces the idea of a lake and mountains, and the possibility of being in a special place with someone for ten, and then twenty-four, "true summers." This creates a sense of deep connection and intimacy between the singer and the person they address.

The final verse juxtaposes images of an eagle and a sailor, both observing the land, with a philosophical tone about losing time and searching for answers. The image of being "surrounded by a million years" creates a sense of both awe and insignificance. The final repetition of "I'll be the roundabout" suggests a sense of completion or fulfillment in the journey.

Whilst the performances of Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman are superb.... the hero of this performance is the bass player. He has captured the spirit of Squire's playing (and vitally singing) and remains humble enough to let the lead players shine... but really he's nailing it in every way, while remaining a 'side-man', which is an incredible balancing act.
I really hope ARW, move beyond the main three-guys and embrace these other guys as fully fledged members of Yes and get them involved in the writing of new material. They've seriously earned it. Just my view.

We agree with you JLF. Very disappointing that Lee wasn’t visually recognized during this particular songs as well. Classic “dick move” in our opinion, whether it was intentional or not.🎧

I saw Lee Pomeroy playing bass for ELO a few years back, but I had no idea that he could pull off something of this magnitude. There's not too many people that could pull off Chris Squire's bass part for Roundabout, and I bet that there are less than five people who play an upside-down strung bass who can do it. He not only nails it but he makes it look easy.

Also, glad to see he used a Rickenbacker for this song. Anything else would be heresy.

Chris Hooker

I Couldn't agree more. He is absolutely awesome and seems happy just to be there. In most other bands he would be centre stage.

Joseph Arruda

@John Ehmer Molino is definitely a Rabin recruit, as they've worked together since before he was in Yes.

Barcoux

@Joseph Arruda Lou kills it on Kim Mitchell's Rockland album

Rick Wakeman is a freaking genius. When the Wizard is playing with Yes, it truly is YES!

Gene

That’s Sir Rick to us peasants!

Barry Cowen

The story behind Ricks capes is he didn’t want people to see his feet going from pedals and effects,so he bought a cape with a star on the back from a dj who was on the same show . True story.

Lee Pomeroy is a great bassist and he totally nailed this performance. Chris would be proud.
