Borrowed Time
Rick and Morty & Tennis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I thought that the sun burned brighter
With you by my side
And that we'd go on forever
Together you and I

Now I'm waking from a dream
I've been following you foolishly
Leaving you is hard for me
But I gotta do what's right for me

Thought we'd go on, you by my side
Forever, you and I
We raised hell, every night
Together, you and I

I thought the world stopped turning
Without you by my side
How we burned it down together
Every single night

Now I'm waking from a dream
I've been following you foolishly
You were playing God with me
And I bought it all completely, yeah

Honestly, I
Sometimes I've been good for you
I'm not dreaming
You're already leaving me

Thought we'd go on, you by my side
Forever, you and I
We raised hell, every night
Together, you and I
Running on borrowed time
Forever, you and I

Thought we'd go on, you by my side
Together, you and I

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Borrowed Time" by Rick and Morty & Tennis depict a relationship that has come to an end. It seems that the singer is missing their partner and is reflecting on the good times they once shared. The first verse suggests that the singer felt more alive and vibrant when they were with their partner. They believed that they would be together forever and that nothing could break them apart. However, as the song progresses, the singer starts to realize that they were living in a dream-like state, that they were foolishly following their partner. The second verse implies that the partner was playing God with the singer, and they were completely taken in by them. Nevertheless, the singer acknowledges that it's time to move on and do what's right for themselves.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea that the singer believed they were indestructible when they were together. They raised hell every night and thought that they would continue forever. However, the line "we're running on borrowed time" suggests that this belief was unfounded. The bridge implies that the break-up was not entirely one-sided, and there were things the singer could have done differently to save the relationship. But it's too late, and their partner has already left them.

Fucked up thing is, I am the one who broke up and kept my decision until she moved to Bulgaria to study medicine, which was planned for us to go and study together.

I went my own way, went to study psychology in Aberdeen, Scotland. It’s all grey and grey, which I thought I wouldn’t mind, but as you start really living in a place it messes with your head specially if you are questioning your decisions and yourself.

Went back to my birth country, pandemic happened, now I am studying Medicine as well and met plenty of new people, but somehow I still can’t get closure.

All the while during these years we would talk a bit, sometimes fight and not talk for years, she still texts me, I still respond. I don’t know, I don’t if I should give in, would I be happier then? Reminding myself the reason why I broke up in the first place, I just don’t know, perhaps never will. And I can live with that today, plenty of things that I won’t ever know for sure.

You may think me a bitch, a fool, perhaps an overthinker but I just put this out there to the internet, so I myself can have these thoughts organized, but since we are here with the internet, let’s do something one never should: ask advice to the internet.
We share the same home country, same hometown, she will be on holidays soon and come down. Should I see her?

Any of yall who complains about a wall of text should get better a reading. “Well then, maybe you should type better”
Well, maybe you should go fook yourself this is my comment until you tube, censors my azs, cause curse words and curse exposing the real mess that life is. You may live it all and not realize the mess, just like you are doing now reading this comment on your room. Wait… that’s me. I tried lighten up the mood towards the end but it is what it is, in the hopes it was an entertaining read at least.

The trademarked songs by other artists (like Look On Down From The Bridge and I Am The Antichrist To You) were picked from Roiland's spotify playlist, according to Harmon. Dude has a knack for finding obscure songs that shred your heart strings.
