Up From The Skies
Rickie Lee Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me everything

I just want to talk to you
I won't do you no harm
I just want to know about your different lives
On this is here people farm
I heard some of you got your families
Living in cages tall and cold
And some just sit there and dust away
Past the age of old.
Is this true?
Please let me talk to you.

I just want to know
The rooms behind your minds
Uh do I see a vacuum there
Or am I going blind?
Or is it just remains of vibrations
And they happen long ago?
Things like "Love the world" and
"Let your fancy flow"
Is this true?
Please let me talk to you
Is this true?
I just want to talk to you.

I have lived here before
The days of ice
So of course this is why
I'm so concerned about the earth
'Cause I come back to find
The stars are misplaced
And the smell of a world
That's burned
A smell of a world
That's burned.

So where do I purchase my ticket?
I'd just like to have a ringside seat
I want to hear about these new Mother Earth
I want to hear and see everything
I want to hear and see everything
I want to hear and see everything

I want you to show me
I want you to say to me
Show me everything
Oh yeah is that true?
Is that true?
Please let me talk to you
Oh my new Mother Earth
I won't do you no harm
Yes I have lived here before,

Many times many times
I know you.

Overall Meaning

Rickie Lee Jones’s song Up From The Skies is an exploration of human experience and perception. The singer of the song is a curious observer who desires to gain more insight into different people’s lives. The opening lines “Tell me everything / I just want to talk to you / I won't do you no harm / I just want to know about your different lives” convey a sense of openness and willingness to learn from others. The usage of the metaphor “people farm” to describe the world suggests a sense of detachment from the world and an overall sense of observation without exploitation.

As the song progresses, Rickie Lee Jones takes on a more philosophical note, questioning the nature of human consciousness and memory. The lines “The rooms behind your minds / Uh do I see a vacuum there / Or am I going blind?” evoke a sense of confusion and uncertainty about the nature of consciousness. The line “Is this true? / Please let me talk to you” captures a desire for confirmation and for an enhanced sense of understanding.

The song concludes with a sense of nostalgia and longing for a different world. The lines “Yes I have lived here before, / Many times many times / I know you” suggest a belief in reincarnation and the cyclic nature of life. The lines “Oh my new Mother Earth / I won't do you no harm” convey a sense of protectiveness and desire to preserve the world for future generations.

Turning this hard rock electric Hendrix piece into cool acoustic jazz is nothing short of genius.  What an arrangement, not to mention the vocal interpretation!

Ran

+Clamchucker well I dont know much about hard rock and stuff but the original is pretty much on the same beat and vibe so it aint that surprising if u think about it

Clamchucker

+Ran Perry:  The original is all electric, a product of the psychedelic theme which Hendrix emulated so well.  It is solid rock.  Jones has converted it to an acoustic jazz piece.  Listen to the original, then this.  I believe you will notice a difference.  Yes, the key is the same, the cadence is as well, but it is a completely different sound.  It is a magnificent interpretation of the original.  Both versions are brilliantly executed within their own disciplines.

Dirkardo StEvergreen

I have to agree with Ran, I would say the original is more jazz/rock fusion than hard rock. This just pushes it more into the jazz sphere. But I agree, both versions are great.

Clamchucker

You may very well be correct, Dikardo StEvergeen. Your analysis may be more refined than mine. The Hedrix version may well be interpreted as "fusion." Thank you! [And yes, both versions are nothing less than magnificent!!!].

@Clamchucker = Regrettably one cannot listen to the original on youtube, because the owners of Jimi's ghost are sphincters.

Unreal, this chick can do a killer cover of about anything musical, even does a killer rendition of Hendrix no less. And her choice of songs that she covers is amazing. Rickie's got a huge talent, and her voice makes me....aroused. Her ol' squeeze Tom Waites ( for no man) described her as the sexiest woman on the planet. She expresses it so well in her music.

Totally agree. Love her music: Her songwriting's awesome, her voice is one of a kind, and what a kind. And she seems like such a lovely human being. She said she wants her music to help heal herself and heal the people who listen to it. It certainly works. :)
