Jones settled in LA at the age of nineteen, doing the classic waiting tables stuff until she landed a recording contract with Warners. Her self-titled debut album in 1979 was a big success, as was the single, Chuck E.'s in Love, about her musician friend Chuck E. Weiss. At the 1980 Grammy Awards, she won a Grammy for Best New Artist, and also received four more nominations: for Record of the Year; Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female; Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female; and Song of the Year (for "Chuck E.'s in Love"). While none of her subsequent recordings achieved the same level of commercial success, Jones has continued releasing critically acclaimed albums that have explored a variety of sonic terrain from jazz standards to trip hop influenced works.
Jones' pursuit of jazz standards led to the recording of "The Moon Is Made of Gold" and "Autumn Leaves" for Rob Wasserman's album Duets in 1985. The latter track earned her another Grammy nomination. And in 1990, her duet with Dr. John, a cover of "Makin' Whoopee", earned the artist her second Grammy Award, this time in the category of Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group.
At the time of recording her debut album, Jones was in a romantic relationship with Tom Waits; she is the girl draped over the car on the cover of his 1978 album Blue Valentine.
Early in her career, Jones was known for her drinking and substance abuse. She eventually tempered those demons, and came to terms with herself, and her own uncertain spirituality, and has maintained respect of her musical peers.
She's devoted to her talents, beyond music, one of which is raising her teenage daughter, and has even run her own political website and made music critiquing the Bush administration. She is involved in left-wing politics and community activism, partly through her web community, Furniture for the People (http://www.furnitureforthepeople.com/).
A greatest hits collection on Rhino called The Duchess of Coolsville was released in 2005.
In 2007 she signed to New West Records releasing The Sermon On Exposition Blvd, a record exploring lyrical territory inspired by Lee Cantelon's 1991 book The Words, which attempted to translate Christ's teachings into a more accessible contemporary format. Cantelon's friend, Guitarist Peter Atanasoff was instrumental in the creation of the eventual record.

We Belong Together

You were aiming your best friend
That you wear like a switchblade on a chain around your neck
I think you picked this up in Mexico from your dad
Now its daddy on the booze
And Brando on the ice
Now it's Dean in the doorway
With one more way he can't play this scene twice
And you told her to stand tall whet you kissed her
But that's not where you were thinking...
How could a Natalie Wood not get sucked into a scene so custom tucked?
How now look who shows up
In the same place
In this case
I think it's better
To face it -
We belong together
We belong together
Once Johnny the King made a spit ring
And all the skid kids saw a very, very proud man
And he entwine her in his finger
And she lay there like a baby in his hand
And climb upon the rooftop docks lookin' out on the crosstown seas
And he wraps his jacket across her shoulders
And he falls and hugs and holds her on his knees
But a sailor just takes a broad down to the dark end of the fair
To turn her into a tattoo
That will whisper
Into the back of Johnny's black hair
And now Johnny the King walks these streets without her in the rain
Lookin' for a leather jacket
And a girl who wrote her name forever
A promise that -
We belong together
We belong together
Shall we weigh along these streets
Young lions on the lam?
Are the signs you hid deep in your heart
All left on neon for them?
Who are foolish
Who are victim
Of the sailors and the ducky boys who would
Move into your eyes and lips and
Every tear
That falls down on the neighborhood now
I said "Bird, we just gotta tell them"
And they turn and ignore us
And the only heroes we got left
Are written right before us
And the only angel who sees us now
Watches through each other's eyes
And I can hear him
In every footstep's passing sigh
He goes crazy these nights
Watching heartbeats go by...
And they wisper -
We belong together
We belong together
The song "We Belong Together" by Rickie Lee Jones is a ballad that tells a story of forbidden love and lost love amid the backdrop of a city. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a young girl who falls in love with a bad boy who wears a switchblade on his neck and is involved with the wrong crowd. The song is imbued with a sense of nostalgia and longing as the singer laments the loss of love and the passing of time.
The first verse of the song describes the singer's love interest as someone who is involved in a dangerous game of chicken, pointing out that he is not playing fair by aiming at his best friend. The second verse goes deeper into their love affair, describing how the singer tries to help her lover by telling her to stand tall when he kisses her, but she is ultimately sucked into the scene "so custom tucked" that she cannot resist. The third verse takes on a more philosophical tone, asking whether the signs hidden in people's hearts are now all neon lights for fools and victims of the sailors and ducky boys.
Overall, "We Belong Together" is a powerful ballad that captures the emotions of love and loss with poignant lyrics and a haunting melody.
Line by Line Meaning
I say this was no game of chicken
This wasn't just a silly or trivial matter
You were aiming your best friend
Your actions were directed towards someone you supposedly cared about deeply
That you wear like a switchblade on a chain around your neck
Your best friend holds a significant and potentially dangerous place in your life
I think you picked this up in Mexico from your dad
Your deeply ingrained issues with relationships and loyalty stem from your upbringing
Now its daddy on the booze
Your father has a drinking problem
And Brando on the ice
Marlon Brando has passed away
Now it's Dean in the doorway
James Dean is present in the moment
With one more way he can't play this scene twice
There is no going back or repeating what has already happened
So you drug her down every drag of this forbidden fit of love
You dragged your best friend down with you into a dangerous and taboo romantic relationship
And you told her to stand tall whet you kissed her
You encouraged her to be strong while giving her mixed signals about your true intentions
But that's not where you were thinking...
Your true intentions were not in line with what you were saying
How could a Natalie Wood not get sucked into a scene so custom tucked?
It's easy to fall into a dangerous and alluring situation like this
How now look who shows up
The consequences have arrived
In the same place
The situation has come full circle
In this case
With this situation
I think it's better
It's better to acknowledge the truth of the situation
To face it -
To confront it head-on
We belong together
Despite everything, we are meant to be together
We belong together
A reaffirmation of our bond and connection
Once Johnny the King made a spit ring
A memory is recalled
And all the skid kids saw a very, very proud man
Johnny the King was a respected and admired figure
And he entwine her in his finger
He held her tightly in his grasp
And she lay there like a baby in his hand
She was vulnerable and trusting
And climb upon the rooftop docks lookin' out on the crosstown seas
They shared an intimate moment together
And he wraps his jacket across her shoulders
He shows both protective and affectionate behavior
And he falls and hugs and holds her on his knees
He is emotionally vulnerable and connected to her
But a sailor just takes a broad down to the dark end of the fair
A harsh reminder of the danger and unpredictability of life
To turn her into a tattoo
To mark her with his possession and lust
That will whisper
A permanent reminder of his control over her
Into the back of Johnny's black hair
A reminder of the weight of his actions and the power dynamics at play
And now Johnny the King walks these streets without her in the rain
Heartbreak and sadness
Lookin' for a leather jacket
Searching for a connection to the past and to her
And a girl who wrote her name forever
A memory and reminder of their bond and kinship
A promise that -
A promise that they were meant to be together
We belong together
A refrain of the main theme of the song
We belong together
A reaffirmation of their love and connection
Shall we weigh along these streets
Shall we walk together?
Young lions on the lam?
A reference to their wild and free spirit
Are the signs you hid deep in your heart
Did you truly mean what you said?
All left on neon for them?
Are your intentions obvious to everyone else?
Who are foolish
Those who are naive and foolish
Who are victim
Those who have been taken advantage of
Of the sailors and the ducky boys who would
Of those who are rough and take what they want
Move into your eyes and lips and
To take advantage of your vulnerability
Every tear
Every emotion
That falls down on the neighborhood now
The emotions are amplified and felt by everyone
I said "Bird, we just gotta tell them"
We need to be honest about our feelings and intentions
And they turn and ignore us
But they might not listen or care
And the only heroes we got left
We have no one else to rely on
Are written right before us
Our story and our love are the only things we have
And the only angel who sees us now
God or a higher power is watching over us
Watches through each other's eyes
We are intertwined and connected
And I can hear him
I can sense this presence
In every footstep's passing sigh
In every moment and every emotion
He goes crazy these nights
We might feel lost or confused, but we are not alone
Watching heartbeats go by...
We are all connected by our emotions and our humanity
And they wisper -
The refrain returns
We belong together
Our love is undeniable
We belong together
Our bond transcends all else

35 years ago my wife and I fell in love listening to this album. Weâve belonged together ever since.

@Hank Breveleri thx. Weâre still two hearts beating as one and became los abuelos a month ago. We also saw RLJ in Boulder a few months back. Nice intimate theater setting, great audience, some gummies and Rickie.
