Ringo however, is no newcomer to the music scene, and has perservered through a succession of bands, and session work which has had him recording with artists as diverse as Hugh Masekela, Simply Red, Teddy Pendergrass (The Power of One) and [aryist]Caiphus Semenya, as well as for the movie The Lion King.
Born in Cape Town in 1964, Ringo spent his childhood and school days in Gugulethu township, but finished high school in Umtata. Ringo was musically active from a young age, and while at school, led an acapella group which performed at community and youth functions. He later became vocalist for the group "Ikwezi", but it was to be as frontman for the band "Peto", that his unique vocal talents were first recognised nationally.
Peto won the national "Shell Road to Fame" talent competition in 1986, and this brought the band - and Ringo - national exposure, with television profile, touring engagements, and the role of support act for the King’s Trust" concert in Swaziland which was headlined by Eric Clapton.
Peto soon disbanded, and Ringo moved base to Johannesburg, where he spent the early 1990's as a member of Gecko Moon. During this time, he also did a lot of studio session work - for radio commercials, film, and album recordings
Ringo’s first album, Vukani ("Wake Up!") was released in 1996, during which year he also served as a support act when Papa Wemba toured South Africa as part of the Re-Connection Programme.
His second album, Sondelani ("Get Closer") was released late in 1997, and with its themes of reconciliation and national unity, carried a strong message for South African people. The album achieved Double Platinum status in sales, awards, and major airplay. This has ensured that Ringo has remained a sought after act on the performing circuit in South Africa.

Ringo Lyrics

My feet on the floor
Heading down the highway on the 104
Gotta get the lid out cant be late
In and out of traffic got no time to waste
Slow down, Slow down, Slow down!, Slow down
Calm Is good
When your mind is busy with woulda coulda should
You betta slow down
Check is in the mail but someone forgot the stamp
Trying to find some peace of mind and put it in the bank
Slow down, Slow down, Slow down, Slow down
Is good
When your mind is busy with woulda coulda should
You betta slow down
Slow down, Slow down, Slow down
Ringo Starr's song "Slow Down" is a call to slow down and take a breath. The first verse of the song stresses the importance of heading down the highway with one's feet on the floor and face to the wind. The feeling of being in control of oneself is acknowledged. The song hints towards a sense of urgency to get something done, but not wanting to be late. The reference to being in and out of traffic shows that the journey isn't as smooth as one would like, but the task has to be accomplished regardless. Ringo uses the refrain "Slow down!" to highlight that haste can lead to mistakes and slow progress down the road.
The second verse continues the theme of wanting things to go smoothly to get something done. The check being in the mail is a metaphor for wanting something to happen in its own time, but requiring patience to let things sort themselves out. The phrase "someone forgot the stamp" shows a lack of control over the situation, and needs to be rectified. The song emphasizes the need to slow down to find peace of mind and achieve one's goals more thoughtfully.
"Slow Down" can be interpreted in many different ways. It can be seen as a call to live mindfully and not be swayed by external forces. One can internalize the song's message and think of their day-to-day activities, that they need to do, but don't necessarily have to be done in a frenzied state. It can be thought of as stripping things down to the essentials and not letting anything ruffle your feathers. Ringo portrays a strong case for the listener to slow down and seek calm and collectiveness.
