Everchanging
Rise Against Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the face
Of change
That's when she turned to me and said
"I'm not sure anymore"

And there
Amidst the waves and the cloudless skies
That blanket the year before
I watch my life wash ashore

Have you ever been a part of something
That you thought would never end?
And then, of course it did
Have you ever felt the weight inside you
Pulling away inside your skin?
And then something had to give

Now the lines are drawn
Is this feeling gone?
The best parts of this have come and gone
And now that is is this all there is?
And with the reasons clear
We'll spend another year
Without direction, full of fear
And now things will be different

There's nothing simple when it comes to you and I
Always something in this everchanging life
And there probably always will
And now that time is getting harder to come by
The same arguments are always on our mind
We've killed this slowly fading light

Now the lines are drawn
Is this feeling gone?
The best parts of this have come and gone
And now that is is this all there is?
And with the reasons clear
We'll spend another year
Without direction, full of fear
But now things will be different

And now something
Has kept me here too long
And you can't leave me
If I'm already gone

Well, now something (hey)
Has kept me here too long
And you can't leave me (hey)
If I'm already gone

Now let's say that something (hey)
Has kept me here too long
And you can't leave me (hey)
If I'm already gone

Now say we make the same mistakes
We're always hanging on
Break the promises we're always leaning on
All this time spent waking up

Keep this line open to get this call from you
Speak the words that keep me coming back to you
Now this time it's all different

Now something

Has kept me here too long
And now I'm gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rise Against's "Everchanging" explore the feelings of uncertainty that arise when faced with change. The first verse describes a moment when the singer's partner expresses her uncertainty about their relationship. The subsequent lines reflect on how life can suddenly shift, leaving us without a clear sense of direction.

The second verse considers the idea of impermanence, asking the listener if they have ever been a part of something they thought would last forever, only to see it come to an end. The chorus repeats the question of whether a feeling is truly gone after a relationship has ended. The bridge reflects on the difficulty of sustaining a relationship in an ever-changing world, where the same problems keep cropping up.

The final verse is a plea to keep the lines of communication open, even if the relationship is on its last legs. The repetition of the line "Now something has kept me here too long" underscores the sense of being stuck in a situation that is no longer working. The final line, "And now I'm gone," suggests that the singer has finally found the courage to move on.

Overall, "Everchanging" is a powerful meditation on the complexities of love and the inevitability of change. Its evocative lyrics and driving melody make it a standout track on Rise Against's debut album, "The Unraveling."

Years later and this song still cuts me pretty deep... Love it

For real tho.

Ditto.

This band is a deep cut. I've fallen off over the years. They definitely changed after siren song of the counter culture and I lost interest, but everything siren song and before is fucking amazing. I liked their version of nervous breakdown in the lords of Dogtown movie too. I like the gallows version better though, something about a British accent makes it more punk idk. And now I'm rambling but here in 2021 baby!

D Gunn

2020 baby we still here 🤘🤘

Two lines right in the feels, “have you ever been a part of something that you thought would never end and then of course it did” and, “now something has kept me here too long and you can’t leave me if I’m already gone.” Fuck me thats some poetic shit. Tim is a lyrical genius
