Roadside
Rise Against Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me what I'm supposed to do
With all these left over feelings of you
'Cause I don't know
And tell me how I'm supposed to feel
When all these nightmares become real
'Cause I don't know

And I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find
(together)
And I don't know how we
Separate the lies here from the truth
(time)
And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what we're supposed to do

(together)
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry

And I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find
(together)
And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what were supposed to do

(together)
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry

'Cause I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find
(together)
And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what we're supposed to do

(tim)
...exactly what to do

Overall Meaning

In Rise Against’s song “Roadside,” the singer is grappling with leftover emotions from a past relationship while also feeling uncertain about how to navigate their current reality. The repeated refrain of “leave me at the roadside and hang me up and out to dry” reveals a sense of abandonment and feeling discarded. The lyrics convey a sense of confusion about the path forward and a sense of disillusionment with the relationship that’s ended.

The lines “And I don't know how we/Woke up one day somehow thought we knew/Exactly what we're supposed to do” speaks to the human tendency to think we have everything figured out, only to realize that life is far more complex and unpredictable than we can ever anticipate. The repeated theme of “together” emphasizes the singer's desire to have a sense of togetherness and connection, but ultimately they feel lost and without direction. The song paints a vivid picture of the emotional turmoil that can arise in the aftermath of a breakup, leaving the listener with a sense of rawness and vulnerability.
