Coolidge's early career was as a backing vocalist, for artists such as Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, and Leon Russell. Her performance of "Superstar" on the Cocker/Russell Mad Dogs and Englishmen album helped gain her attention. She became known as "The Delta Lady" and inspired Leon Russell to write a song of the same name for her. It was during this time that she met Kris Kristofferson; the two married in 1973. With him, she recorded several duet albums which sold well, and earned them a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1974 for From the Bottle to the Bottom, and in 1976 for Lover Please.
In 1997, Coolidge was one of the founding members of Walela, a Native American music trio, that also includes Coolidge's sister Priscilla and Priscilla's daughter Laura Satterfield. The trio released albums in 1997 and 2000. Walela means hummingbird in Cherokee.

And it may never end
So cry no more
On the shore, a dream
Will take us out to sea
Forever more, forever more
Close your eyes and dream
'Neath the waves
Through the caves of ours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone, we're all alone
Close the window, calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out, let it all begin
Learn how to pretend
Once a story's told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do, lovers too
So cast your seasons to the wind
And hold me, dear
Oh, hold me, dear
Close the window, calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out, let it all begin
All's forgotten now
We're all alone, oh, we're all alone
Close the window, calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out, let it all begin
Owe it to the wind
My love
The song "We're All Alone" by Rita Coolidge is a romantic ballad that describes the feeling of being alone with a loved one. The first verse sets the scene of a rainy night, with the suggestion that it may continue for some time. The singer instructs the listener not to cry, because they are together and they have a dream that will transport them to an eternal sea. The second verse describes how the couple can be together even if they are physically separated by the lyrics are used to take the loved one on an imaginary journey through caves and waves. This is a metaphor for the emotional journey they are sharing.
In the chorus, the singer tells the listener to close the window, calm the light, and relax. Things will be all right, there is no need to worry. The tension ebbs away, as the lyrics encourage the loved one to let it all out, to let everything begin again. The singer suggests that after telling their story, they should not worry that it will grow old like the seasons that change or the love that fades. Instead, the couple should hold onto each other and owe everything to the wind.
Overall, the song's interpretation is that we all seek solace in our relationships with loved ones, but through the passing of time, we have to deal with aging and the changing of our relationships, much like the cyclical change of seasons. The dreamy and poetic lyrics are open to interpretation and allow the listener to attach their own meaning to the song.
