She grew up in Jamaica, and was singing with a trio named The Soulettes in the mid sixties recording for Studio One when she met Bob Marley. She married him in 1966, and then became a singer in his backing vocals group, the I Threes. She had three children with him and two outside of the marriage. She converted to the Rastafari movement after witnessing Haile Selassie on his visit to Kingston, Jamaica on 21 April 1966. She convinced Bob Marley to convert as well. She wrote many of the songs recorded by Bob while backing him.[citation needed] After Marley's death, she recorded few albums under her name with some success in the United Kingdom. She took care of Marley's estate and mentored her son, Ziggy Marley.
In January 2005 it was claimed that she wished Bob Marley's body be reburied in Ethiopia, but she denied that there were any such plans. Rita currently lives in Ghana and spends a lot of time in Florida, and sometimes her home in Jamaica. Some of her family reside in Canada.

I Know A Place

And the shop and the store put the lock on the door
Just get away where your worries won't find you
If you like, well I'll tell you more.
Don't let the day get the better of you
When the evening comes there's so much to do
You better put on your best and wear a smile
'Cause I tell you.
I know a place
where the music is fine
And the lights are always low
I know a place where we can go.
At the door there's a man who will greet you
Then you go downstairs to some tables and chairs
Soon I'm sure you'll be tappin' your feet
Because the beat is the greatest there.
All round there are girls and boys
It's a swingin' place, a cellar full of noise
It's got an atmosphere of its own somehow
You gotta come along right now
'Cause I tell you.
I know a place
where the music is fine
And the lights are always low
I know a place where we can go.
It's a swingin' place, a cellar full of noise
It's got an atmosphere of its own somehow
You gotta come along right now
'Cause I tell you.
I know a place
where the music is fine
And the lights are always low
I know a place where we can go.
I know a place where we can go
I know a place where the lights are low
You're gonna love this place I know
I know a place where we can go...
Rita Marley's "I Know A Place" is a joyous invitation to escape the pressures of the day and enjoy oneself in a crowded, noisy atmosphere filled with music and people dancing. Every day, after work is done and shops have closed for the night, the singer encourages her audience to abandon their worries and come with her to a place where the music is fine, the lights are low and the atmosphere is electric. All around, there are girls and boys, tables and chairs, and an unmistakable sense of liveliness that permeates this space.
As the song progresses, the singer describes a welcoming atmosphere where a man greets patrons at the door, leading them down to the cellar where the music is filled with rhythm and beat. The singer assures her audience that they will soon find themselves tapping their feet and moving rhythmically to the sound. The secret to enjoying this place is to put on one's best smile, shed one's daily worries, and allow oneself to be carried away by the music and the atmosphere that envelops the place.
Overall, the song can be seen as a tribute to the power of music and its ability to transport listeners from the mundane worries of everyday life to a joyful, celebratory space. It is a reminder that sometimes the best thing one can do for oneself is to get away from it all, immerse oneself in music, and give oneself permission to let go, relax and enjoy life to the fullest.
