Wilson was born Margarita Ibrahimoff (Bulgarian: Маргарита Ибрахимов; Greek: Μαργαρίτα Ιμπραΐμοβ) in Los Angeles, California. Her mother was born and raised in an ethnic Greek village (Sotirë) in present-day Albania. Her father, born Hassan Ibrahimoff (March 21, 1920 – March 6, 2009), worked at a race track; he was a Bulgarian Muslim immigrant, born in Oraio, Xanthi, Greece, and lived in Bulgaria, where his half brother Ferhat still lives,[ before moving to the United States on May 4, 1949. Wilson's father changed his name from Hassan Ibrahimoff to Allan Wilson in 1960, "Wilson" being the name of a local street in Southern California. Wilson was raised in the Greek Orthodox religion.
Wilson's career began with a guest appearance on The Brady Bunch, in a 1972 episode entitled "Greg's Triangle," which was followed by appearances on several shows during the 1970s and 1980s (including Three's Company in 1982).
She has appeared in several movies, including Volunteers, Teen Witch, The Bonfire of the Vanities, Barbarians at the Gate, Mixed Nuts, Sleepless in Seattle, Now and Then, That Thing You Do!, Jingle All the Way, Runaway Bride, Invisible Child, The Story of Us, and Raise Your Voice. She played Susan Borman, wife of astronaut Frank Borman, in the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. On television, she guest starred in many television series, including Frasier, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Good Wife and Body of Proof.
Wilson has performed on Broadway, where she performed the role of Roxie Hart from June–August 2006 in the revival of Chicago.
She is often credited with being the driving force behind Nia Vardalos' movie deal for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which became the highest-grossing independent film of all time, and for which she served as a producer.
Wilson's debut solo album, AM/FM, will be released May 8, 2012, on Decca Records. The album will feature classics from the 60s and 70s.
Wilson married actor Tom Hanks in 1988, and they have two sons, Chester and Truman. Wilson has two stepchildren, Colin and Elizabeth Hanks. Wilson has one grandchild, and two step-grandchildren.
Along for the Ride

Won't need your wallet, leave your phone at home
The only pictures that you take'll be the memories that you make
My wheels aren't shining, but they'll get us there
Right now don't wanna hear how life's not fair
Used up my lemons, and today I'm only sippin' lemonade
Doesn't really matter where we're going
Half the fun is all about not knowing
Oh, roll the windows down
Let your hands wave in the air and let the music blare
Oh, if you don't think that we won't fly
Come along for the ride
And if it rains, we'll bring our own sunshine
'Cause havin' fun is just a state of mind
You know you're gonna go insane if we don't get a little crazy
Doesn't really matter where we're going
Half the fun is all about not knowing
Oh, roll the windows down
Let your hands wave in the air and let the music blare
Oh, if you don't think that we won't fly
Come along for the ride
Those plans you thought you made won't happen anyway
I'm standin' here, so what you say?
Oh, roll the windows down
Let your hands wave in the air and let the music blare
Oh, if you don't think that we won't fly
Come along for the ride
Oh, roll the windows down
Let your hands wave in the air and let the music blare
Oh, if you don't think that we won't fly
Come along for the ride
(Oh) oh
We got some places that we gotta see
(Oh) oh, oh, oh
Come along for the ride
Come along for the ride
The lyrics of Rita Wilson's song "Along for the Ride" convey a sense of spontaneity and embracing the moment without worrying about the destination. The singer urges the listener to break free from their routine, symbolized by getting off the couch and putting on Ray Bans, leaving behind material possessions like wallets and phones. The emphasis is on living in the present and creating lasting memories through experiences rather than physical souvenirs. The singer acknowledges that life may not always be fair, but chooses to focus on enjoying the sweetness of life's simple pleasures, like sipping lemonade.
The imagery of rolling down the windows, feeling the breeze on your hands, and cranking up the music signifies a carefree and liberating feeling of driving with no particular destination in mind. The idea of flying, both literally and metaphorically, suggests a sense of limitless potential and adventure awaiting if one is open to taking risks and embracing the unknown. The lyrics emphasize that the journey itself is as significant as the endpoint, capturing the essence of living in the moment and surrendering to the thrill of uncertainty.
Even in the face of unexpected challenges like rain, the singer encourages creating one's own sunshine and maintaining a positive attitude. The lyrics suggest that having fun is a mindset and a choice, emphasizing the importance of letting loose, being a little crazy, and finding joy in spontaneity. Plans may not always go as intended, but the singer invites the listener to join them on a journey where the destination is secondary to the shared experiences and sense of freedom that come from being open to whatever comes their way.
In the final chorus, the repetition of the invitation to come along for the ride reinforces the idea of unity and shared experiences. The lyrics suggest that there are places to explore and adventures to be had, and the singer encourages the listener to embrace the unknown and trust in the journey. Overall, "Along for the Ride" is a celebration of living in the moment, embracing spontaneity, and finding joy in the simple pleasures of life's unpredictable journey.
