One Foot in the Grave
Ritual Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You were the one, I never thought you wouldn't care.
In the end it's up to you, which way you choose,
But you won't live long this way, I swear.
Driving the ignorance to the top.
I can't treat your dirty tongue to stop.
Cheap apologies were said so much.
Over and out, that's all I have to say.
The lyrics of Ritual's song "One Foot in the Grave" seem to be about the singer's past relationship. They remark at the beginning that they never thought their partner would take such a daring risk, but then things shifted, and they stopped caring. The singer notes that in the end, it's up to their partner which way they choose to go, but they warn them that if they continue down their current path, they will not last long. It's as if they are trying to warn their partner to change their ways before it's too late.
The second half of the song seems to focus on the damage done. The singer says they can't stop their partner's dirty words, and they've heard too many apologies that have fallen short. It seems as if this relationship has broken down because of a lack of trust and care. When the singer says "over and out, that's all I have to say," it seems as if they've given up trying to repair things. The final phrase "you're with one foot in the grave" drives home the point that at this point, their partner is on a self-destructive path that may lead to their demise.
