Robert Johnson Lyrics

I'm a steady rollin man
I roll both night and day
I'm a steady rollin man
Hmmm hmmm I roll both night and day
But I haven't got no sweet woman
Hmm mmm boys to be rollin this way

I'm the man that rolls
When icicles hangin on the tree
I'm the man that rolls
When icicles hangin on the tre
And now you hear me howlin, baby
Hmm hmmm mmm down on my bended knee

I'm a hard workin man
Have been for many years I know
I'm a hard workin man
Have been for many long years I know
And some cream puffs usin my money
Ooh well babe, that'll never be no more
You can't give your sweet woman
Everything she wants in one time
Ooh hoo ooo
You can't give your sweet woman
Everything she wants in one time

Well boys, she get ramblin in her brain
Hmmm mmm mmm some other man on her mind

I'm a steady rollin man
I roll both night and day
I'm a steady rollin man
Hmmm hmmm I roll both night and day
But I haven't got no sweet woman
Hmm mmm boys to be rollin this way

Overall Meaning

In "I am a Steady Rolling Man," Robert Johnson sings about himself as a hardworking, self-sufficient rolling man who doesn't need a woman, but also laments his lack of a sweet woman to be rolling with. The song is, therefore, a paradox. On the one hand, Johnson paints himself as a carefree, roaming soul, living by his own rules and rolling incessantly, whereas, on the other hand, he admits to longing for a partner. The song's tone is somewhat melancholy, possibly hinting at the loneliness that can accompany a life of constant movement.

Throughout the song, Johnson references his unique and relentless work ethic, even going so far as to describe himself rolling when icicles hang from trees. The image of rolling with such persistence creates a sense of determination, dedication, and movement towards a fixed goal, which likely served as a metaphor for Johnson's life as a wandering bluesman. Despite this determination and work ethic, Johnson's portrayal of himself as a man who cannot provide everything his woman wants suggests that, for all his effort, he still feels that he falls short in some way.

In summary, "I am a Steady Rolling Man" is a song about self-sufficiency and the struggle to find balance between a desire for independence and a longing for companionship.

Thank you for keeping him heard after so many years 🕊️

@ubik372

The original is not primitive, it's probably the most sophisticated performance there is of this blues song.

@macpony2571780

Once you get an ear for the origional version after hearing it so electrified by other artists you realize how much nicer it is in it's pure form

@JosephStalin1941

I've never listened to the electric versions and dont intend to either

@wdklabs

So true, the soul is just gone somehow

@rushilgholkar3620

Clapton's version is damn good tbf

@rcde2

I’ve listened to every known version. This is my favorite one. So sad such a talent didn’t get the benefits of what was soon to come. RIP Mr. Johnson.
