Carol of the Bells
Robert Shaw Chorale Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hark, how the bells
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say,
"Throw cares away"
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old
Meek and the bold

Ding, dong, ding, dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling
One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From everywhere
Filling the air

Oh how they pound
Raising the sound
O'er hill and dale
Telling their tale
Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas

On, on they send
On without end
Their joyful tone
To every home

Hark! how the bells
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say
"Throw cares away"
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old
Meek and the bold

Ding, dong, ding, dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling
One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From everywhere
Filling the air

Oh how they pound
Raising the sound
O'er hill and dale
Telling their tale
Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas

On, on they send
On without end
Their joyful tone
To every home

On, on they send
On without end

Their joyful tone
To every home

Feels like I've been looking for this version since the damn Carter Administration . Why in the hell is it so hard to find, given its history and, oh yeah, the fact that it's the best version by far?

There has to be someone to blame... and I won't rest until I find out who! ;-)

Ahh, what the hell... it was worth the wait. Just listened to it fives times in a row, and each time I got waves of chills. Beautiful, and almost haunting.

My mother loved this song, and this version.

She passed away last year. And while I've accepted it, inasmuch as that's possible, certain reminders like this song trigger a heartache that is breathtaking in its intensity.

I guess it will never go away completely.

Rest in peace mom. I miss you with a depth that would shame any of the world's oceans.
