Stardust
Roberta Gambarini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.
Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song
Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.
The lyrics to Roberta Gambarini & Hank Jones's song Stardust are a poignant reflection on lost love and the bittersweet memories that come along with it. The opening lines paint a vivid picture of a sunset, as the "purple dusk of twilight time steals across the meadows of my heart." The use of personification is particularly effective here, as the metaphor of the sky as a vast expanse becomes a powerful representation of the singer's emotions, with the little stars climbing high up in the sky and serving as a constant reminder of their separation from a loved one.
As the song progresses, the lyrics delve deeper into the singer's sense of longing and nostalgia. They reminisce about a time when their love was new, and each kiss was an inspiration. The melody of that love haunts their reverie, and even though their love is now "the stardust of yesterday," the music of the years gone by still rings clear. The final stanza is a tender moment of retreat, as the singer dreams of being with their lover in a paradise where roses grow. Even though it may be a dream, the memory of the stardust melody remains, forever echoing in their heart.
Overall, the lyrics to Stardust are a beautiful example of the power of music to capture the complexities of human emotion. By describing the natural world in such an evocative way, the song manages to convey the depth of feeling that arises from lost love, while also offering a glimmer of hope in the memory of that love's melody.
