He regularly does solo work, and returns again and again to bands he has formed like The Soft Boys and The Egyptians. Hitchcock is an avid and able collaborator with people like director Jonathan Demme, actor Alan Rickman, country/folk duo (and longtime Hitchcock fans) Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, The Venus 3, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, Young Fresh Fellows' frontman Scott McCaughey, Andy Partridge of XTC, Nick Lowe, former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Jon Brion, and Grant-Lee Phillips, as well as Ministry's Bill Rieflin.
Hitchcock's musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by his appreciation of Bob Dylan, Gregory Corso, The Byrds, Country Joe & The Fish, and Syd Barrett.
Hitchcock's lyrics are an essential component of his work, and tend to include surrealism, comedic songs, characterisations of English eccentrics, plant roots, insects, trains, dreams, and melancholy depictions of everyday life. His themes include what many psychologists view as the roots of modern neurosis - namely, death, sex, and eating. (As if in recognition of these themes, he released an EP in 2007 called "Sex, Food, Death and Tarantulas".)

Yes I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Well I thought I knew all about everything,
But I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
And she's staring through a crack in the sky,
Yes she's staring through a crack in the sky.
Well I thought I knew all about everything,
Well I thought I knew all about everything,
But I was wrong.
Well I thought I knew all about everything,
I thought I knew all about everything,
But I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Yes, I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Oh, I thought I knew all about everything,
But I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
And she's in love with a wonderful guy,
Yes, she's in love with a wonderful guy,
Well I hope she's in love love with whom I think she's in love,
I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
I'm a charming and dangerous guy,
Yes, I'm a charming and dangerous guy.
If you don't expect too much it's alright,
I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Yes, I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Well I thought I knew all about everything,
But I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
And we're going through a hole in the sky,
Yeah, we're going throuhg a hole in the sky.
We'll be up there for the longest while,
'Cause I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Yes, I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Well I thought I knew all about everything,
But I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Yes, I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
Well I thought I knew all about everything,
But I'm in love with a beautiful girl.
The song "Beautiful Girl" by Robyn Hitchcock delves into the unpredictable nature of love and how it can turn your world upside down. The singer starts by admitting that he is in love with a beautiful girl and how he thought he knew everything about life until he met her. As the song progresses, the singer describes how his love interest is staring through a crack in the sky, which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the limitations of reality and the possibility of transcending it through love.
The chorus repeats the same line "Well I thought I knew all about everything, but I'm in love with a beautiful girl," emphasizing the shocking realization that love can bring. The final verse reveals that the beautiful girl is also in love with a wonderful guy and the singer hopes it's the same person he thinks it is. He then describes himself as a charming and dangerous guy, hinting at his willingness to take risks for love. The song ends on a hopeful note with the couple going through a hole in the sky and being together for the longest while.
