Watching You
Rodney Atkins Lyrics

With a Happy Meal in his booster seat
Knowing that he couldn't have the toy
'Til his nuggets were gone
A green traffic light turned straight to red
I hit my brakes and mumbled under my breath
His fries went a flying and his orange drink covered his lap
Well, then my four year old said a four letter word
So I said, "Son, now where did you learn to talk like that?"
He said, "I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
We got cowboy boots and camo pants
Yeah, we're just alike, hey, ain't we dad?
I wanna do everything you do
So I've been watching you"
We got back home, and I went to the barn
I bowed my head, and I prayed real hard
Said, "Lord, please help me help my stupid self"
Then this side of bedtime later that night
Turning on my son's Scooby Doo night light
He crawled out of bed, and he got down on his knees
He closed his little eyes, folded his little hands
Spoke to God like he was talkin' to a friend
And I said, "Son, now where'd you learn to pray like that?"
He said, "I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
We like fixing things and holding mama's hand
Yeah, we're just alike, hey, ain't we, dad?
I wanna do everything you do
So I've been watching you"
With tears in my eyes, I wrapped him in a hug
Said, "My little bear is growing up"
And he said, "But when I'm big, I'll still know what to do"
"'Cause I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
By then I'll be strong as Superman
We'll be just alike, hey, won't we, dad?
When I can do everything you do
'Cause I've been watching you"
Hey, yeah, uh huh
Rodney Atkins's song "Watching You" tells the story of a father and son's journey, as the son looks up to his dad and wants to emulate all his actions. The song is narrated from the father's perspective and shows how he is unknowingly influencing his son's behavior. The first verse describes a trip where the father and son are driving through town, and the son is eating a Happy Meal. Suddenly, they hit the brakes, and the food spills on the boy's lap. The son then utters a swear word, causing the father to ask where he learned it. The son's response is that he has been watching his dad and wants to be just like him.
The second verse focuses on the son's prayer habits. The father discovers that his son has been praying in a similar manner to him, and it dawns on him that his actions have a significant impact on his son's development. In the end, the father is moved to tears by his son's innocence and expression of love for him. The song is heartwarming and highlights the connection between a father and son.
Overall, "Watching You" is a touching and optimistic tune that encourages fathers to be mindful of their actions and how they influence their children's behavior.

Driving through town, just my boy and me
With a happy meal in his booster seat
Knowing that he couldn't have the toy
'Til his nuggets were gone
I was driving with my son who sat on his booster seat and held his happy meal, but he was not allowed to play with his toy until he finished his nuggets.
A green traffic light turned straight to red
I hit my brakes and mumbled under my breath
As fries went a flying and his orange drink covered his lap
Well, then my four year old said a four letter word
That started with 'S' and I was concerned
So I said, 'Son, now where did you learn to talk like that?'
As we drove, the traffic light turned red, and I had to brake suddenly. Fries and his drink spilled all over him, and he said a bad word that made me ask where he learned it.
He said, 'I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
We got cowboy boots and camo pants
Yeah, we're just alike, hey, ain't we dad?
I wanna do everything you do
So I've been watching you'
My son said he learned things from me by observing, including wanting to eat all his food and grow like me. He also finds it cool to have matching clothing with me, and he wants to imitate everything he sees me do.
We got back home, and I went to the barn
I bowed my head, and I prayed real hard
Said, 'Lord, please help me help my stupid self'
Upon arriving home, I went to the barn and prayed to God for guidance to help me to be an excellent role model for my son.
Then this side of bedtime later that night
Turning on my son's Scooby Doo night light
He crawled out of bed, and he got down on his knees
He closed his little eyes, folded his little hands
And spoke to God like he was talking to a friend
And I said, 'Son, now where'd you learn to pray like that?'
Later that night, before bedtime, I turned on my son's Scooby Doo night light. As I watched him, he got down on his knees and talked to God like a friend. I asked where he learned to pray, and he said he learned by watching me.
He said, 'I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
We like fixing things and holding mama's hand
Yeah, we're just alike, hey, ain't we, dad?
I wanna do everything you do
So I've been watching you.'
My son explained to me that he learns from observing me and wants to be like me. He enjoys doing things together, such as fixing things and holding hands with his mother, and he wants to do what I do.
With tears in my eyes, I wrapped him in a hug
Said, 'My little bear is growing up'
He said, 'But when I'm big, I'll still know what to do'
''Cause I've been watching you, Dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
Then I'll be as strong as Superman
We'll be just alike, hey, won't we, Dad?
When I can do everything you do
'Cause I've been watching you'
With tears in my eyes, I hugged my son and declared his growing-up phase. He said that, even when he was fully grown, he would continue learning from me because he would be just like me. He wants to eat his food, grow up strong like Superman and do things with me like we are the same.

When I was little, like seven years old, I was such a daddy's girl and I would sing this song to my dad over and over again. Anyway I had totally forgotten about it and I'm 17 now and will be 18 in August. About a month ago my dad died and this song just popped into my head and I looked it up and this is the first time I cried since I found out he died and it really helped. I don't think I'll ever forget about it again.
