Crucify Your Mind
Rodriguez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Was it a huntsman or a player
That made you pay the cost
That now assumes relaxed positions
And prostitutes your loss?
Were you tortured by your own thirst
In those pleasures that you seek
That made you Tom the curious
That makes you James the weak?

And you claim you got something going
Something you call unique
But I've seen your self-pity showing
As the tears rolled down your cheeks

Soon you know I'll leave you
And I'll never look behind
'Cos I was born for the purpose
That crucifies your mind
So con, convince your mirror
As you've always done before
Giving substance to shadows
Giving substance ever more

And you assume you got something to offer
Secrets shiny and new

But how much of you is repetition
That you didn't whisper to him too

Overall Meaning

The song "Crucify Your Mind" by Rodriguez is a deep and introspective exploration of the human condition. The first stanza of the song asks a series of questions, questioning the motives of the person who caused the singer's suffering. The second stanza is about the singer himself, and how he has convinced himself he is unique, but in reality, he is just repeating the same cycle of self-pity and sorrow. The final stanza is about the singer leaving behind his old life, and the repetition of his own story.

The questions posed in the first stanza are particularly important. The huntsman or player is a figure that may have caused the singer harm, but it is unclear who exactly this person is. Is it an individual or society as a whole that has caused harm? The questions themselves create a sense of ambiguity, which is only magnified by the next line which talks about the individual assuming relaxed positions and prostituting the singer's loss. This image further complicates the situation, creating a sense of loss, pain, and exploitation.

The second stanza is significantly softer in its delivery, but its message is equally important. The singer assumes he is special or unique, but the reality is that he is stuck in a cycle of self-pity and suffering. The line 'giving substance to shadows, giving substance ever more' is particularly interesting as it suggests that the singer lives in a world of his own making, one that he reinforces every day.

Overall, Crucify Your Mind is a melancholic and moving exploration of the human condition. It is a song that delves into the darkest corners of the human psyche, and the difficulties of trying to break away from toxic patterns of behavior.

Thank you South Africa for keeping the man alive for the rest of us.

Had a following in Australia in the late 70s as well, and certainly had some airplay on alternative radio stations like 2JJ, but not like South Africa. It was a combination of situations that saw him become huge there. The local youth identified with his lyrics as relating to their own situation. The biggest mystery is why he could not gain any traction whatsoever in the US with songs like this. One theory is that it was his foreign name and appearance.

Seriously love his stuff. This one especially

Still so poignant today!
