1) ROME is a Luxembourgish neofolk act founded in late 2005 as the main output for the songs of Jerome Reuter and was joined by co-producer Patrick Damiani as official member in early 2008. ROME signed to the Swedish label CMI in 2006 to release an EP titled "Berlin" (June 2006) and the albums "Nera" (November 2006), "Confessions d'un voleur d'ames" (April 2007), "Masse Mensch Material" (March 2008). In 2009 ROME got signed to the german label Trisol and released the EP "To Die Among Strangers" (May 2009) and the album "Flowers From Exile" (June 2009).
In their earlier work ROME mixes influences of Industrial and Neofolk with Experimental and Electronic Pop. The traditions of (French) Chanson and (American) Folk are becoming more and more influential in their current work. In 2009 violin player Nikos Mavridis officially joined the band to further contribute to the creation of their unique sound, which they themselves refer to as Chanson Noir. Nikos left the band in late 2010 to answer the army's call and Patrick found himself more and more tied up in the work for his own professional recording studio in Germany. ROME released the EP "L'assassin" in early 2010, shortly before going into hiatus, followed by the full length "Nos chants perdus". In 2011, Jerome, the project's only real flag-bearer, recorded and released the trilogy "Die Aesthetik Der Herrschaftsfreiheit" (Trisol) and has taken up touring again with his new band mates Patrick Kleinbauer, Eric Emmel and Tom Luciani. ROME's lyrics often deal with anarchism and are demanding freedom and equal rights for all people on earth.

This Silver Coil
Rome Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All that was right is now forlorn
And where is the fire that once was inside
The spirit is gone
My hands are tied
There's a silver snake guarding my heart
It spits and curls itself around
I told you to take it slow
I told you I was young
Oh, and I will follow you all across the ocean
Where everything begins anew and is kept in motion
Oh, I will follow you all across the ocean
Where everything begins anew
My hands are tied
The spirit is gone
And where is the fire
That once kept me going
There's a silver snake inside my head
This silver coil is in my hide
This silver coil is all you get
This silver coil is on my tongue
This silver coil is all you'll taste
This silver coil around my lungs
Oh, now I will follow you all across the ocean
Where everything begins anew and is kept in motion
Oh, I will follow you all across the ocean
Where everything begins anew
My hands are tied
The spirit has gone
And where is the fire
That once kept me going
Oh, and now I will follow you all across the ocean
Where everything begins anew and is kept in motion
Oh, I will follow you all across the ocean
Where everything begins anew
My hands are tied
The spirit has gone
And where is the fire
That once kept me going
The lyrics in "This Silver Coil" are about feeling lost and disconnected, as represented by the imagery of a silver snake or coil that is guarding the heart and consuming the singer. It feels as though the fire that was once inside them is now gone and their spirit is tied up, leaving them feeling helpless and directionless. The singer is reaching out to someone they trust, expressing their desire to follow them across the ocean where everything begins anew and is kept in motion. They hope that by doing so, they can rediscover the fire that they have lost and find new meaning and purpose in their life.
The silver snake imagery suggests that the singer is being consumed or choked by something within themselves, which could be anxiety, depression, or some other internal struggle. The repeated mention of hands being tied and the spirit being gone implies a sense of powerlessness and feeling stuck in their situation. The reference to following someone across the ocean suggests a desire for escape and the possibility of finding something new or different that can help them move forward. Overall, the lyrics speak to a sense of longing for change and a hope for renewal or rebirth.

Indeed, these songs have provoked more critical thought from myself than I believe, nearly any other piece of media or schooling ever has done in my entire life, and has vastly improved my cognitive understanding of the world, at least I like to believe.

For me as a 60 year old man, this song is very ... special. Philisoping as a young man about the extinguished fire of life is one side. Seeing the fire go out for yourself is something very, very different. If tears were an option, I might cry.
