It Was Almost Like a Song
Ronnie Milsap Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once in every life
Someone comes along
And you came to me
It was almost like a song

You were in my arms
Right where you belong
And we were so in love
It was almost like a song

January through December
We had such a perfect year
Then the flame became a dying ember
All at once you weren't here

Now my broken heart
Cries for you each night
And It's almost like a song
But it's much too sad to write

Now my broken heart
Cries for you each night
And It's almost like a song
But it's much too sad to write

It's too sad to write

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Ronnie Milsap's hit ballad, "It Was Almost Like a Song," set the tone for a poignant narrative of a love that was deeply felt but ultimately fleeting. The song conveys themes of love, loss, and the depth of human emotions. The first two lines state that somebody special comes into a person's life, and then he met the person, and it was almost like a song. The comparison to a song is evocative and powerful, setting the stage for a poignant tale of love.

The lyricist demonstrates this singular interaction's sweetness as the two characters fall in love in the subsequent lines. The words express the feeling of being meant to be, of being loved and held in the right spot, safe and sound by the one who loves them. The theme of significance and unrequited love becomes present and unmistakable in the second verse after a year-long journey. The emotion in the singer's voice shifts to match the sorrowful tone of the lyrics. The refrain, "It was almost like a song," emphasizes how real and powerful the love used to be.

Love this Ballad! That last note Ronnie sings is perfectly executed! It sends chills up my spine every single time I hear it! Truly a masterful musician! It's always very refreshing to listen to older artists like Ronnie and Perry Como and take a break from all of the pop artists of today. Being a relatively young man, I consider it a true gift from God to be able to listen to and appreciate songs like these. Call me old fashioned. In many ways I am. :D

Same here...perfectly said👍

Sandra Jones

Older artists? Ronnie and Perry Como? Not even close in age. Did you know one of his teachers told him he'd never amount to anything and he couldn't sing? 😂😂😂

I'm sorry. My condolences

@Sandra Jones he’s saying he appreciates being able to listen to artists that are not part of the modern listening repertoire. Not that they are both the same age.

This song is what I would like to say to my 26 year old son. It will be played at his funeral. I feel it was written just for me to say to him. My heart is breaking for him. I love him and miss him so very much.
