Slaves
Rorschach Test Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and everyone wants to make someone cry and bring flowers at their funeral
but everyone's a slave to them self
Everybody thinks they get some special magic from all of these icons that we make of glass and stone
And everybody reaches to the sky to trick themselves into believing that we're not alone
But Jesus was born in a barn that's why he leaves the door open
I'd rather be a murderer than to be a murder victim
Everyone's a slave to them self, and everyone's afraid of them self.
The lyrics to Rorschach Test's song Slaves delve into the theme of human existence and self-imposed limitations. The first line, "Everyone wants to think [they] serve some kind of purpose in this world," highlights the importance of feeling significant in life. It is human nature to desire recognition and meaning, however, the following line states "and everyone wants to make someone cry and bring flowers at their funeral," indicating that our desire for importance leads us to want to be remembered, even at the expense of others’ emotions.
The chorus, "but everyone's a slave to themselves" emphasizes the idea that we have created our own limitations and become trapped by our own desires and notions of purpose. The second verse speaks about how we idolize various concepts and things such as icons made of glass and stone, and reach for the sky to convince ourselves that we are not alone. However, the verse concludes with the acknowledgement of Jesus being born in a lowly manger, to appreciate humility and simplicity in life.
The final lines of the song state, "nobody has ever loved no one except maybe themselves," which could be seen as a bleak statement on human nature or a plea to acknowledge self-love as a necessary component of life. Overall, the lyrics to Slaves offer a dark insight into the human condition and the desire for significance, but also touches on themes of humility and self-love.
