Southern Stars
Rose Tattoo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The ghosts of Eureka are calling to me now
To fashion a sword from the steel of the plough
And if blood must spill, for freedom so dear
Rally 'round the flag boys, rally 'round and cheer

I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars

I was born and raised here this land is my home
And I'll fight if I have to keep this land my own
I'm a man with pride, my heart is straight ahead
So come and swear an oath on the stars above our head

I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars

The countries glories are fading away
But here I was born and here I'll stay

I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live
Under southern stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars

I wanna live my life under Southern Stars
I wanna live my life under Southern Stars

Overall Meaning

The Rose Tattoo's song Southern Stars is a tribute to the band's Australian roots, celebrating the country's proud history and its people's unique identity. The opening lyrics refer to the ghost of Eureka, which is a reference to the Eureka Stockade, a rebellion by gold miners during the Australian gold rush against oppressive colonial authorities. The rebellion took place in December 1854 at Eureka Creek near Ballarat, Victoria. The miners created their own flag, a blue and white cross with a white five-pointed star, which is now known as the Eureka Flag. The song suggests that the ghost of Eureka calls on the band to "fashion a sword from the steel of the plough," implying that ordinary people can take up arms and fight for their rights.

The song's chorus consists of the repeated line "I wanna live my life under Southern Stars," a clear commitment to the band's love for Australia and their desire to stay connected to their roots. The lyrics also suggest that the band members were born and raised in Australia and will "fight if they have to keep this land their own." The song builds upon the idea that the country's glories are fading away, but the members' love for their homeland is unwavering.
