She Cried
Rowland S. Howard Lyrics

And how i try, oh how i try
I could never give you just what you deserve
Another man would surely learn
I know these words may only serve to twist the knife
But i'll strive to make them heard
Maybe it's better now i've gone away
And though it's hard for me to say
I know you're better off this way
And when i told her i didn't love her anymore
She cried
And when i told her her kisses were not like before
She cried
And when i told her another girl had caught my eye
She cried
And then i kissed her with a kiss
That could only mean goodbye
And though it's hard for me to say
Maybe you're better off this way
And though it's hard for me to say
I know you're better off this way
The lyrics of Rowland S. Howard's song "She Cried" portray a bittersweet goodbye to a lover. The persona of the song expresses remorse for causing pain to their partner but acknowledges their inability to provide for their partner's needs. The opening lines of the song: "I never meant for you to get hurt/ And how I try, oh how I try/ I could never give you just what you deserve/ Another man would surely learn" paints the picture of the persona's futile efforts in trying to make the relationship work. The persona goes ahead to ponder on whether leaving was the best decision as they sing "Maybe it's better now I've gone away / Maybe it's not, oh who can say".
The song then delves deeper into the emotions of the persona and their partner. As the persona narrates how they broke the news that they no longer loved their partner like they used to, their partner broke down in tears. The lyrics show the hurt and confusion that the partner feels upon hearing about the persona's feelings as they sing "And when I told her I didn't love her anymore/ She cried/ And when I told her her kisses were not like before/ She cried/ And when I told her another girl had caught my eye/ She cried/ And then I kissed her with a kiss/ That could only mean goodbye". Even amidst the hurt, the persona acknowledges that it might be for the best that they go their separate ways.
Overall, the lyrics of "She Cried" by Rowland S. Howard tell a story of a tumultuous relationship that has come to an end. The persona expresses remorse and sadness but also acknowledges that it may be better now that they have gone their separate ways.
