2. Reaching all the way back to Bob Dylan and the Band's pioneering blend of mythic Americana and shaggy rock & roll, alongside more recent points of comparison like Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, and My Morning Jacket, Roy (a band, not a dude) blend spiky post-Pavement indie rock with folk and country influences for a sound that's connected to the musical past but not beholden to it. For over a decade, singer and guitarist Brian Cook and drummer Dave Verellen were the mainstays of Botch, a Seattle post-hardcore act specializing in heavy riffs and showy time-signature shifts. Roy began as a side project in 2002, bringing Cook and Verellen together with singer and guitarist Ben Verellen and bassist Mike Cooper. Naming themselves after the small rural town near Tacoma, Roy debuted with 2003's Tacomatose EP, followed by 2004's Big City Sin and Small Town Redemption. Though Roy toured extensively behind their two records, the band went on a temporary hiatus while Cook and Ben Verellen turned their focus to another side project, the more Botch-like heavy math rockers These Arms Are Snakes. Roy reconvened in 2005 to write and record their second full-length album, Killed John Train, which was released by Lujo Records in the spring of 2006.

We Are Not Ready
Roy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I await the day we fly like you do
I know the reasons why
You've stayed away to hide the truth
We still fight for power
We don't feel we stand together
Our minds are in this world
We are not ready
For what you bring to us
We are not ready
For what you offer us
If I stay away and hide
Search through our books in time
Will I find you
When you are in my dreams
Am I an abductee or a tool
Is there a meaning
Are we made of waves of light
Please I am waiting
Come and take me into the night
We are not ready
For what you bring to us
We are not ready
For what you offer us
Peace and prosperity
Long live and answers
Questions we've long asked of
We are not ready
The lyrics of Roy's song "We Are Not Ready" delve into themes of longing, questioning, and the idea of readiness for something beyond our understanding. The opening lines, "Palms raised up to the sky, I await the day we fly like you do," evoke a sense of yearning and aspiration to reach a higher level of existence or understanding that seems unattainable at the moment. It suggests a desire to transcend our current limitations.
The lyrics hint at a presence or entity that has chosen to stay hidden, implying a knowledge or truth that has been kept from humanity. This entity is portrayed as having a level of control over their thoughts and actions that we as humans lack, highlighting a perceived disparity in power and awareness between us and this mysterious "you" being referred to in the song.
The repeated refrain, "We are not ready for what you bring to us, we are not ready for what you offer us," underscores the idea of unpreparedness and inadequacy in the face of the unknown. It suggests a reluctance or hesitance to accept the changes or revelations that this entity is said to offer, perhaps out of fear or a sense of unworthiness.
The lyrics further explore themes of seeking understanding and connection through dreams and introspection. The singer questions their own role in this cosmic puzzle, wondering if they are merely a subject to be studied or a tool to be used by this mysterious entity. The longing for answers and a deeper understanding of our place in the universe is palpable in lines like "Is there a meaning, are we made of waves of light, please I am waiting, come and take me into the night."
In conclusion, "We Are Not Ready" is a contemplative and introspective song that grapples with themes of power, readiness, and the unknown. It invites listeners to ponder their own readiness for what the future may bring, and to question their place in a universe that may hold mysteries beyond our current comprehension. The lyrics convey a sense of anticipation, uncertainty, and a yearning for connection and understanding that resonates with the human experience of grappling with the unknown and the unknowable.

Agreed!!!
@royster3345
Brett made the character, from the voice down to the way he moved. Even the body language in this scene is brilliant, all the characters evolved through the series.

And to think he was at one time the writer. And when they were trying to find an actor to play Roy Kent—he did up a tape and sent it over.

A poignant scene to answer a real issue in sport. Kudos to the writers.
