In Roy Orbison's song "Afraid To Sleep", the singer is restless at night and can't seem to fall asleep. As the night grows still and the wind chilled, the sound of rain falling on the windowpane can be heard. The singer is hesitant to close their eyes and fall asleep because they know they will only dream of the person they are trying to forget. They are trying to erase all memories of their past lover, but it's proving to be a difficult task. They are in a state of conflict with themselves; they don't want to forget, but they also don't want to be reminded of the one they lost.
