It's Lonely
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every sleepy dawn wakes to find you gone, and it's lonely.
All my sunny days, laugh and run away, it's lonely.
(Oh so lonely)

The sun don't really shine,it's lonely.
Always to remind me that it's only another day,
To feel this way.it's lonely.Lonely.
I am lonely all the time, you're not mine.
Without you I find,it's lonely.
Each new starry sky, smiles and says goodbye,it's lonely.
Dreams we used to share tell me you don't care, it's lonely.

The moon has lost its glow, it's lonely.
It is there to show me that it's only another night,
I can't hold you tight, it's lonely.Lonely.

I know why I cry, for all the world to see.
You're not here with me, it's lonely,Lonely,Lonely.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "It's Lonely" by Roy Orbison paints a picture of a person going through the pangs of unrequited love and the isolation that comes along with it. The song talks about waking up to each new day feeling emptier without the person they desire by their side. The sun, once a source of brightness and warmth, now only reminds them of the loneliness they feel. Even the starry night sky fails to bring a smile to their face, as it only reminds them of the dreams they used to share with their loved one but no longer can. The moon, once a symbol of beauty and romance, has lost its shine as it only highlights the fact that they cannot hold their loved one close.

The songwriter brilliantly captures the hollow feeling of loneliness through the lyrics, and the poignant repetition of the phrase 'it's lonely' emphasizes the pain and emptiness the character is going through. The chorus, "I am lonely all the time, you're not mine" rounds out the picture of a person who is left wanting and yearning for someone who cannot be theirs. The final lines, "I know why I cry, for all the world to see. You're not here with me, it's lonely" highlights the sadness and heartache the character is experiencing.

Roy Orbison der beste Sänger für mich, so romantisch und toll,Dankeschön ❤

Gene Casey

Classic song by Orbison/Melson (or is it Dees?) that suffers from a slipshod treatment by producer Jerry Kennedy. Roy's voice is hopelessly distorted throughout, as it was on the entire LP. That this was deemed releasable indicates Mercury's lack of care and appreciation for this (by this time) living legend.

Mark J. Rockman

Yep, this one's Orbison-Melson.
In 1975, it was good to have Joe back collaborating with Roy.
